This email is off topic for emu10k1-devel. emu10k1-devel is for the old, 
soon to be extinct emu10k1 oss driver.

You are running the correct ALSA driver.
Please raise a bug on either http://www.alsa-project.org/
or http://bugzilla.kernel.org/

We can then track this properly.

With the bug report please add the output from:
cat /proc/asound/cards
cat /proc/asound/version
lspci -vn | grep -1 0401
amixer

Also, is it just midi that fails to play, or is it all sound?
