I get an error after the make install command,
everything proceeds normally until I get

/sbin/modprobe-r emu1ok1.o
ac97_codec.o: Device or resource busy. (Except
that its not busy doing anything at all).

I have tried installing in graphical and non graphical
more but I always get this error.

Please advise...

I have also tried quitting the sound server (in case device
busy meant anything) and this had no effect either.

I have the same problem running on Redhat 8.0 with the
2.4.18-19.8.0 kernel. Any advice would be very helpful.

Well I don't think your going to get any help around here,
the peeps here never seem to answer anything. But you can
try what I did and download it again. The second time I
downloaded it is worked. Also make sure that Audigy support
is switched off in your kernel as the two might conflict.
(You are awatre that its there I guess?). What I need is
digital sound out, which I'm not sure the kernel driver
provides... Maybe it does and I didn't check properly, or
ccouldn't figure out how to use it. Also I have never been
able to get this driver to work yet. It asks for something
called xmixer which is a very old mixer, the last release
was 1999 and bitches that it cannot find mixer in /dev even
after searching (very hard) to find this old outdated xmixer
    thing...

Oh well, maybe the next driver version will solve this...

The FAQ attributes this to an issue with a Promise Card or
onboard. I have an ABIT motherboard with built in Promise
Raid. I have the same issue.
