At some point someone has to do the talking. There is such a thing as excessive de-coupling, to the point where nothing communicates! The Event callback pattern is a standard Java design practice so it is a completely acceptable approach that has no serious drawback. The visibility is still one-way as the JAPL code is not dependent on the Embedlet API and can be used in other applications. I agree with Andrjez that JAPL should not make Embedlet Event calls - but I do not think that you were proposing this in the first place.
