The OP of this thread is underway or gone lost in space on my side.

If you want to 'Release' via CVS, why don't you use CVS? There are 
Branching and Tagging technics to solve the leading-edge-HEAD and the 
stable-release Branch issue.

This is what CVS is for.

Do not get it yet. What is a "Zip"? What is the difference between the 
User and the 'who-not-be-named'? What about backporting and bugfixing?
