Since ethernet is a CSMA (carrier sense, multiple access) technology, it
can never be 'instanteous' or 'hard real-time'. However, many
controllers are becoming smarter and manufactures are also able to put
more control at the controllers instead of at the administrative level.
It will be interesting to see what happens here. I suspect that a new
family of devices will evolve due to reduced cost of processing power,
and the need to remove realtime control from the comms link...
