Here is an group providing standards and a forum for PLC manufacturers. This
market, I feel, is a natural for integration with (and displacement by)
embedded java, as I think James pointed out. There is a page on the world
wide market as of 1995 projected to 2000:

One of the related initiatives (see home page) is an XML format for the PLC
languages. This would be a natural gateway to convert PLC implementations to
Embedlets.
