locks up when trying to synthesize

When I start up emacs with emacspeak, I hear the sound
clip that says "this is emacspeak" with the music in
the background. If I then press ctrl-e h or something
similar that's supposed to read stuff, emacs just freezes.
It seems to freeze whenever I try to get it to
synthesize any voice.
I'm running emacs version 20.7.1, emacspeak 14.0,
redhat 7.1, and a standard sound card. I built
emacspeak using 'make config' and 'make emacspeak' and
it didn't seem to generate any errors.

I just ran gtop and noticed that /usr/bin/tcl was running
something in the emacspeak/server directory and had been
taking up 90% of mf cpu for the past few hours.
