In a manual install (configure, make, make install) it ends up in

/usr/local/lib

On Ubuntu 64 and Debian it's located in

/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu

On Ubuntu 32 and Debian it's in

/usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu

On Windows in ends up in

c:\Windows\system32
