Assuming that the problem is actually triggered by a request for a symbol that yahoo doesn't know about (which seems very likely from the description), I suppose the workaround is to not use symbols yahoo does not recognize and/or to find an alternative source of data (e.g., via email, ftp, network connection, etc.). It would be nice if we could find an alternative web site that, for example, has a complete database of European stocks, but so far it appears that no such site exists (although I have not done a thorough investigation into this possibiliy, so I could be wrong).
