Faxes are sent using a fax modem over a telephone line. efax-gtk does not send them by e-mail.
The mail_fax script is for forwarding a received fax to a nominated user.

Warning: bit-reversed HDLC frame, reversing bit order

I shouldn't worry about the warnings. You are probably using a non-real software modem with issues, but it shouldn't affect what it produces.
Actually, the machine works, and emails arrive, but by an error when sending and who sends the same fax sent repeatedly.
