i'm trying to send faxes using XSane and efax comes back with 'non recognizable postscript file'. seems odd when xsane seems to create one. any thoughts.

I do not think I have ever seen efax give that message. If ghostscript finds a file is not valid postscript, efax-gtk will report "Not valid postscript file".
This occurs if ghostscript does not find the file to be valid postscript. It is usually right, so the strong probability is that the file you think is in postscript format is in fact not. Another possibility is that file permissions are wrong.

The .doc file has to be converted to a postscript (.ps) file before efax can send it. If the the conversion utility is not being called correctly, or isn't installed, the .doc file isn't being converted to postscript before efax is attempting to send it. I usually initially save files in postscript format, and that's what I tell efax to send.
It's been a while since I used xsane to fax with efax, I'm having trouble being more specific. Maybe someone else can fill in the gaps. Does some of this info help a little?

As someone else has said, you need to have it as a postscript file, as the error message suggests. If you have CUPS, the easiest thing is to set it up as explained in the README. Otherwise, print to file.

Thanks for your note Chris, you are right, that is the correct error message. When you say the file permissions are wrong, what might i need to check.
Have you tried to send any other files? Is the error message the same for all of them?
i just tried to send a .doc and this is what i got:
ESP Ghostscript 7.07.1: Unrecoverable error, exit code 1
Not valid postscript file
