    Hi,

You have probably specified the wrong device.  /dev/ttyS2 is the third serial port.  It is unusual for modern computers to have so many.  If you do have three serial ports, are you sure that your modem is connected to it?

    dear Crhis ,
I have to tell you something because I was not clear.
Now I use Ubuntu 10 natively.
In 2009 I was using Ubuntu 9.4 with VirtualBox ws under xp.
In 2009 I wrote to you (you can see from the forum) that Efax-gtk did not allow me to send fax, but could receive them. At the time I used ttyS2, because the modem was in WS XP on COM3, and then I used VirtualBox in the COM3 and, Efax-gtk I had made with ttyS2.
Now I'm 10 with Ubuntu natively, so I tried to use the same port (COM3), but I can not even put the fax waiting.
At the end I tried this command that you enclose the result that left me puzzled:
    sudo wvdialconf /etc/wvdial.conf
    Editing `/etc/wvdial.conf'.

Scanning your serial ports for a modem.

    Modem Port Scan<*1>: S0   S1   S2   S3

Sorry, no modem was detected!  Is it in use by another program?
Did you configure it properly with setserial?
Please read the FAQ at http://open.nit.ca/wiki/?WvDial

I attach a response to Marvin Stodolsky who, when I asked to use a modem software in Linux, he says:

Now, I hope it was clearer to make you understand my problem.
    Thanks a lot Crhis.

    Sonia,

It looks as if you using a SmartLink software modem, and if so it will not appear on /dev/ttyS2.  You can check the output of dmesg to see which device it has, but it is probably /dev/ttySL0.  Whether faxing will work is a different issue of course.  It may not: I know very little about slmodemd.

Crhis I used the command dmesg but … I do not understand anything!
I am a bit 'dumb I know but for me this is Cyrillic.
If you find something you … I promise that will not bother you anymore with my Efax.
What can I do if Efax is so cute?
    Thanks Chris.

    Sonia,

Most of the dmesg output is missing.  You need to look for a line with slmodem or something like that in it.  But if you don't have the slmodem package installed you probably won't get anything at all about it in the kernel messages.  Also, look to see if you have a device /dev/ttySL0 - if you have then it is probably at least partly working.

I don't think I can help much more.  efax-gtk assumes that you have a working modem, and at the moment it looks as if you don't.
