This is a new error message for me. The permissions on /var/lock show drwxrwxrwt and I'm fairly certain they haven't changed since I began using efax-gtk. As a matter of fact, I tried changing the lock file in the settings to my home directory, and got the same result. If I recall correctly, the last time I successfully used efax-gtk was 3.05, but not sure. I had 3.06, and upgraded to 3.07 because when I tried using efax-gtk I kept getting this message about the pre-lock file. Perhaps I should try 3.05 again and see what luck I have?

/dev/TMP..04331 is an odd name for a device file but in any event if it is a valid file, you do not specify the "/dev/" part of the device, so specify it as TMP..044331 (see the Help button dialog in the Settings dialog). However, a better approach may be to do a symlink to /dev/modem and specify "modem".

Thank you for the info and your speedy response, Chris.
I had changed it explicity to /dev/modem, forgetting that specifying the /dev/ preceding the device name is incorrect, and of course I didn't bother to click the '?' next to that particular setting, where it says, "don't specify /dev/"
