Education Systems has various levels (usually according to age of students)
starting from lower levels such as school system which consists of
pre-school, primary and secondary education, and higher level
education such as pre-university, university and colleges.
The eduCATE project is targeted at education environments and
configurable to various education systems. These configurations
includes academic or study sessions, study divisions, study
programmes, and study periods. eduCATE is configurable enough to be
use in many countries, with different requirements in the setting up
of the academic parameters.

There are many LMS out there, and most of them are open source. To name few of the LMSes, such as Ilias, Claroline, Moodle, ATutor and the SAKAI project.
EduCATE is one of the many open source LMS out there, but what really differentiates its from others is that, firstly, eduCATE was built with the management of the learning environment in mind, then only the learning collaboration takes place.
EduCATE does not only manages learning materials, but it also manages student’s learning environments, such as, academic sessions, study periods, program structure, fee management and other relevant setups, while most LMS only manages learning materials.
