    The PC Samurai - 2011-07-17

Hi. just found about this project and i'm really interested in its development. You see, I'm working with a group of people who are looking for a really compact and lightweight DE. obviously DE's based on GTK and QT are out of the question. That is how I found out about FLTK and conquently EDE.

I think the concepts and goals of FLTK and EDE generally matches the needs of our group. So i started out how updated the platform is. WIth the recent launch of FLTK 1.3 im interested to know on the direction of EDE will take.

Some other points i'd like to confirm:
    - I believe 2.0 currently requires eFLTK to build and based on my understanding that its using is being deprecated, is this correct?
    - Although I haven't tried building from source yet. Is it still applicable that the project requires jam to build? not gcc?

    Would appreciate feedback regarding this.

    Thanks in advance

    Hi,

I'm pleased you like it and like EDE goals and I'll happily answer your questions :)

EDE 2.0 requires eFLTK only to build window manager. As development of window manager stalled for some time, I'm planning to replace it with some complete solution (e.g. pekwm) to speed up 2.0 release. If you are in hurry to have EDE without eFLTK, I will assist you to replace window manager with another one.

Related to second question: EDE is using jam instead of make to run build process; gcc is still used to compile code :)

I know EDE development get slow in last year, mostly due my obligations to daily job. As things are changed now, I'm hoping my time on EDE will increase.

If you have some ideas, feel free to send me. Also, I'll happily assist in case you find problems with installation or such things :)

    Regards,
    Sanel

    Hey Sanel,

Thanks for replying. Im not really in hurry of replacing FLTK and would rather let you focus on your preferred roadmap for EDE. Given, this i'm very interested in the future of EDE as a Desktop environment and would like to see it in a full blown distribution. I got really pissed with Gnome/Ubuntu spiff and I thought maybe its time to devout some of my attention to an alternative. needless to say i favor speed and functionality over eyecandy.

Although, I'm not a full time coder, I am currently working with a startup that produces low power thin clients. And we're looking on ways on providing a Lean Client environment by embedding the OS into the firmware and not using a full blown distro.

Given this, I'd like to know if you have a roadmap of sorts. That way I can find ways i can contribute to the project.

    Hi,

Sorry for late reply; sometimes sf.net mails gets into spam box; have to do something about it :)

needless to say i favor speed and functionality over eyecandy./quote]

:) yes, I share the same thoughts

I'm very happy to see that EDE could be (or at least is considered) to be a part of your project. Yes, as you could notice, major goal of EDE is to be minimal in any kind of way, including size of library and binaries.

There is a roadmap on http://equinox-project.org/wiki/RoadMap. It needs a little bit update, where major change would be to leave edewm/composite manager aside to speed up release. Also I need to do some boring management tasks (web pages cleanup, repo reorganization and such) before starting to commit new changes on the repo.

Have you tried to compile it on your platform or something like that? Did you find some problems?

    Regards,
    Sanel

We are currently trying to build it under ubuntu 10.04. This is the initial environment the Tech team has selected. everything is pretty much on the explorative phase. hopefully building on ubuntu will be straight forward since it will greatly accelerate our plans.

in the meantime, do you need help in updating your website? im more of a web guy so perhaps i can i assist in that aspect.

    Hi,

Cool. I recently made few fixes so ede and edelib could be compiled on FLTK 1.3 without problems. Do you know is FLTK 1.3 already available on Ubuntu repositories?

Regarding to help: yes, help would be welcome :) Wiki needs detail howto about Ubuntu installation (and depending packages), so if you could find some spare time, you can start there. Also, I would like to update front page (new design) so if you would like to contribute there, feel free to do it.

    Regards,
    Sanel

Hi Sanel. Seems that you're referring to FLTK 1.3 in Ubuntu 11.10. I dunno if im ready to test on an unstable version of ubuntu. But i think i can help you with your website in the meantime. Im quite handy with HTML/CSS and a bit of PHP so i guess probably theme the website to give it an updated look.

    What do you think?

    Hi,

Cool idea :) Yes, please try with some fresh-ier look (html/css) and we will see how to put it inside python code (site is python powered) or, put some simple php code behind it. My goal is to keep wiki as main place, mostly because of easier editing.

You can find svg logo at http://ede.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/ede/trunk/art/ in case you want to integrate it in site.

    Regards,
    Sanel
