(from ssh, gui... etc) You should use the 'screen' utility to launch your core in a remote ssh session, and then put the core into the background with Control-A, Control-D. ie. like this: screen -dmS overnet /home/juan/bin/on/overnet0.49.5 - ! screen -d -r overnet The '-' makes the core listen for a GUI, and the '!' makes the core ingore all keyboard input. Those are optional of course. If you want to remote control that core via a GUI, you need to set up a GUI username/password first with: % cd /home/juan/bin/on/ % ./overnet0.49.5 Welcome bla... > pass juan juanpass > q Do you really want to quit? (y/n) yes % and then do the above with screen. Cheers -Tim |

Hi listers, I have a sever mounted with Debian GNU/Linux and have some questions about the remote control of core. All is shown perfectly from here, my personal computer with gui but if core die or I want to kill it and reload it I should to go phisicaly to the server. This is because if I access by ssh the core die when I close the ssh session and don't find option in the gui for launch it. It's possible to launch the remote core in the away computer? (from ssh, gui... etc) Thanks, --=20 Juan Mart=EDn L=F3pez http://pagina.de/juanotura/ ICQ #76955750 Usuario Linux: 196702 M=E1quina Linux: 87473 Usuario de Debian GNU/Linux SID Miembro de GCUBO.ORG (Grupo GNU Granadino) -- Linux, because rebooting is for adding new hardware ... |

Hi,
this is just to let you know that there is (finally) now a new core
v0.49.5 for both GNU/Linux(x86) and MacOSX.
This core will NOT work any longer with the ed2k-gtk-gui v0.5.0,
because the format of the download status message has changed.
This core WILL work with a recent CVS version of ed2k-gtk-gui though.
v0.49.5 is a bug-fix release. It FIXES mainly:
* the '/' vs. '\' issue in filepaths that resulted in
(a) downloads not completing and always corrupt.
(b) "could not write/create x.part.met" errors.
* file availability in percent calculation
* progress bar is re-implemented for GUI (the progress
bar still has some issues though).
Once you switch to v49.x, you cannot take your temp files back to v48
or ealier. The temp file format and configuration file format
(pref.met, known.met) has changed in v49.x.
IF you ever intend to go back to v48 or ealier, make sure you delete
all your .met configuration files as well (or put the two core versions
in different folders).
So far so good.
I'm planning to do a 0.6.0 release of the GUI next week, btw.
Enjoy!
Cheers
-Tim

Hi, as it happens, there is a v0.49 for linux on the overnet/edonkey download pages. I just tried it, and I also tried the current core version from CVS. However, it seems to me that there is a lot of stuff that needs to be fixed before v0.49 is usable with the GUI. Currently I get no progress bars, no x.part filenames for the v48-style temp file system files (note: v49 introduces a new temp file system again, which is v48 style but with a separate directory for each download). Also, it just doesn't seem to start downloading anything, even with highly popular files which would start downloading within seconds in v48 :-( Therefore I strongly recommend that you stay away from v49 cores for the time being, until these problems are addressed. If you want to try it anyway, please try it with a 'clean install' with different temp and incoming directories, so you don't mess with your old temp files). *sigh* Cheers -Tim |

For your information: There's a new core version on the downloads pages: v0.48.1 I haven't tried it yet, but I hope it fixes the annoying log.txt problem people have had with v0.48. It is recommended that you use the CVS version of the GUI with this core version (or any core >=v45 for that matter). Direct links: http://www.overnet.com/files/overnet0.48.1.tar.gz http://www.overnet.com/files/donkey0.48.1.tar.gz Share your experience here on the mailing lists or in the forums :-) http://forums.edonkey2000.com/phpBBovr/viewtopic.php?t=46670 (overnet forum) http://forums.edonkey2000.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=49724 (edonkey2000 forum) Cheers -Tim PS: if the cvs gui shows strange values for some options like max.connections - just ignore this. It only shows wrong values. You can get the real values by typing !vo into the toolbar. I'll fix this as soon as I get around to it. |

to clarify, the core is on a server sitting in a closet somewhere. I control it with the win32 java gui or the linux gtk gui (which is really excellent). basically, something ( standalone app, script, whatever) needs to connect to the core and authenticate itself. then it needs to issue the dumax x y command and exit. if the connection that's made to the ed2k core is a telnet one then I could cook up something that'll work with expect - autoexpect begs to be used for this one. alternatively, a simple abstraction of the gui app might be concocted whose only function would be to connect, authenticate, change dl rates to specified amount and exit. While I can handle simple shell scripts, I haven't really started with C. Would appreciate some help / pointers in this regard. > On Sunday 27 April 2003 22:33, Aniruddha Shankar wrote: > > Hi, > >> I run a core on a host that has a large amount of other data traffic during the days and almost none at all during the nights. is there some way I can set a cron job that will vary the download / upload speeds that >> the donkey core operates on ? > > (A) > Easy case: You have an ed2k-gtk-gui running which is connected to the core > at > the time the cron jobs run: > > In this case, just make the cron job run a script with something like: > > echo "ed2k://|command|dumax 0 10|/" > /home/joe/.ed2k_gui/pipe > > in it. (A) Easy case: You have an ed2k-gtk-gui running which is connected to the core at the time the cron jobs run: In this case, just make the cron job run a script with something like: echo "ed2k://|command|dumax 0 10|/" > /home/joe/.ed2k_gui/pipe in it. Adjust the values to whatever you like. Joe is the user under whose name the GUI runs. (B) Tough case: the core is not connected to a GUI. In which case you could: (B1) make the '-a' command line option work again (no idea why I disabled it; unfortunately I have currently more pressing things to fix than that) (B2) start the GUI via cron-script with 'auto-connect on start-up' enabled in options and the default host/port/username/password saved in options, wait a few seconds, and then do the above echo thing (and possibly just cold-bloodedly killing the GUI shortly after that), (B3) take the 'ed2k_shutdown' utility from http://ed2k-tools.sf.net and replace the send_logout() function with the send_command() function (or whatever it's called) from the gui's send_command.c file (might need a bit of tweaking, but it's only 4 lines of code, so it can't be that much). Hope this helps. Hi all. I run a core on a host that has a large amount of other data traffic during the days and almost none at all during the nights. is there some way I can set a cron job that will vary the download / upload speeds that the donkey core operates on ? thanks Aniruddha Shankar |

great.

it's not a bug, it's a feature (actually it 'fixes' the previous bug that the
GUI would say 'not connected' when the core is already running and connected
to a server. Not much you can do about it. It will show the server name when
you connect to the next server) ;-)

it seems to me that the correct x.part filename is not always correctly
transfered for each download. Sometimes new/added downloads don't show it
correctly, or only some of the already started downloads don't have it
(resulting in a message).

yeah, it's a known issue. Pretty much at the bottom of the TODO-List though.

you can't switch off the icons. well, you can just delete all the
filetype-*.png icons in your theme directory
(/usr/local/share/ed2k_gui/icons/<theme>/ probably)
list background colours are a theme thing. Most themes do use the 'rule hint'
though and show alternating darker/lighter colours as list background. I
might implement an option to switch off the rule hints for the list, but it's
not top priority at the moment. Better add it as a feature request, so I
don't forget it (same for the bold text, that's not theme-related, but a GUI
thing).

if you have the 'I hate green' option enabled, the colours etc. are
theme-related. You need the 'switch2' utility though ("Gtk theme switch 2.0
beta", for some distros there might be a gtk-theme-switch2 package or
something). GTK+-2.x themes seem to be independent from GTK+-1.2 themes
(that's how it is on my debian sid with kde3.1 system). See:
http://www.muhri.net/nav.php3?node=gts
Don't know about fonts to be honest. They look alright on my box. Maybe go to
irc.gnome.org, channel #gtk+ and ask there.

%cd /usr/local/share/ed2k_gui/icons/<icon_theme>/
%su
(enter password)
#mogrify -resize 75% "*"
will resize all icons in that directory to 75% of the current size. Mogrify
comes with the imagemagick package (at least on debian sid).
At some point in the future, I'll make font and font sizes configurable as
well, but only after the next release.

Okay, the CVS Version of the GUI does the upload stuff correctly as it seems. Both, individual uploads with their speeds and overall upload speed are shown correctly as it seems. The server name isn't being shown, but the IP, I just restarted the GUI, not the core. The GUI says (console message) that the core doesn't support showing .part names, but the names are shown in the context menu and preview works. I've got a completed download with an incompletely drawn completion bar (a grey line marking data being processed). Now some thoughts to the GTK2 - GUI: The searchlist icons and list background colours are nifty, but how the hell do I switch them off? And how do I (as KDE user) configure GTK to use smaller fonts (the filenames in the download window are even *shudder* bold text) and other colours? Changing ~/.gtkrc or ~/.gtkrc-kde doesn't seem to work. With the old GUI, I had the colours adjusted to the KDE colour scheme, making the GUI fit into my desktop, the GTK2 version doesn't do that. The icons bloat up the list item height so much I can only see 25(!) lines in the search screen and 32 in the download screen. That's not enough, verdammtes herumgefrickele, I'll just have to make a smaller icon theme when someone can tell me how to set smaller font sizes. Having to scroll too much and too much icons make the GUI a hassle via VNC, and so I wouldn't be able to watch my downloads when I work (yes, I'm a donkeyjunkie)... The bad news is: The uploads aren't shown like in the .45 and .46 versions. Just run ./autogen.sh which will create a configure script for you. Cheers -Tim |

There seems to be a problem with getting the source through cvs - I have been compiling the gui from cvs ever since it was released under sourceforge but I can't anymore. There's no configure script, no src/ directory - am I doing something wrong or is there something wrong with the code in the cvs repository ? --=20 Aniruddha Shankar Bangalore, India Vipassana works : http://www.dhamma.org |

If it happens again, could you check with '!vc' whether you're actually connected to the network properly (that you're downloading/uploading doesn't really mean anything [don't ask me why]). Also, if you don't get back any results, it might help to search a second or third time, because during the previous searches it is likely that overnet has discovered new relevant nodes (although 'enterprise' is an easy one and shouldn't really make probs). strange. yeah well, glad that it works now. The restart probably made overnet re-boot to the network again. Cheers -Tim |
