Hi everyone, I've released a new version of EClass.Builder on Windows for testing. You can download it from: http://www.eclass.net/downloads/eclass-builder2.5b4.exe I will wait a few days for feedback and then post it on the web site for download. What's changed? - New localization (translation) system: EClass has a new system for localizing the interface into foreign languages. The new system is more automated (I can automatically update the translation dictionaries), can automatically detect and use the user's system language, and there's even a little program people can use to update the localization files. You can learn more about how to update the localization files by checking the help file, under "Advanced/Localizing EClass". I'd particularly like to hear feedback from people who are localizing EClass into Spanish or French on this. - Further improved FTP capabilities: now you can upload pages one-by-one, and there's a "Upload Files on Save" option that lets you automatically upload a file any time it is changed. - Theme import/export: You can now share themes with other users. - Manual filenames: Now you can tell EClass what you want the filename for a particular file to be, rather than having it decide. In addition, I've replaced the old help file in the EClass interface with the new one I've been working on, and I plan on migrating the web site to the new look next week as well. The draft can be found at: http://www.eclass.net/newlook Any feedback would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, Kevin |

Hi Kevino, A few issues/suggestions/problems I have with 2.5b4. I have not been able to get system preferences to open. (win2k machine) In the tutorial, you need to explain the difference between templates = and themes. I think I understand the difference as a theme is an overarching project layout, while a template is a page design. True? When I open page properties, I can only choose the default template, I = have others in the template directory. I would like to be able to choose = others from there without renaming it to default every time.. Under the Help menu, in the About section, you should list the version = of Eclass. Is there a compatibility problem with previous versions of Eclass? If = so, you need some explanation on how to import them, or what files to delete to = use them with the new version. I just tried the Karrigell.exe file on an eclass created in 2.5b4 and it ran. However, it couldn't display the page. I ran the index.htm file separately, it has problems displaying the top left frame (menu.htm) and = the bottom left frame (menucntrl.htm) The main Frame shows up fine. After I copied them in(from a previous Version), it worked. However the menu graphics were gone, I then copied them in. Everything appeared, but the Karrigell ---Little bit later--- I figured out the problem with the Karrigell.exe file. I opened it up in notepad and noticed it points to index.html. Eclass builder uses = index.htm. It is funny and very frustrating how a single character can screw you = up. It works fine after I rename the index file. The search function does not work...neither search.py nor search.exe. When I added text to a page, it did not display even after I published. = I open the page to edit it, and it is there, so it saved the setting, it = just doesn't output. Same thing happens with Audio/video/image. ---Little bit later, again---- The problem with the displaying of the text/image/audio/video is the = template. I copied and renamed an old one to default.tpl and it worked = fine and everything showed up. I guess that is enough for now. Yes, the idea is that Themes control the overall look and feel of your=20= EClass, like FrontPage's borders and Dreamweaver's "templates" (yes,=20 I'd consider them a theme instead). Any change you make to a theme=20 changes the look of the entire EClass. Hi Kevino, I copied the List as I think I am asking questions/facing problems other may be going through. Ok, I got what you are saying...I use themes instead of templates. Within the themes, I can place/change my templates. What happens if I want to use more than one template per theme, say one for class pages and one for quizzes? Would I need to edit the python file, to make quizzes use something different than the default.tpl template? Also, I don't think my theme manager is working correctly. I have switched templates (to no frames) and published and nothing is different, I still get the original theme. Ideas? Yes, you'd need to edit the plugins/quiz.py file to make it use a different template (do a search for "themes" to find it). Hi Kevino, I have done nothing to edit the theme. I just wanted to switch from the "frames" theme to "non-frames" theme. I opened my course (created in 2.5b4), and then opened the "Theme Manager" and selected "Default (non-frames)". I clicked on "Use this theme". I closed the Theme Manager and then I clicked on "refresh theme" in the File menu. I then published my course to CD-ROM, and when I opened my course, nothing had changed, it was the frames theme that I had to start with. Hi Kevino, New versions looks good and all of the previously mentioned problems are = fixed. New issues,=20 1.. The course page can't be edited. Whenever I double click on it or = click the edit button, it brings up the page properties window. When you = publish, the page can't be found. Another funny thing about this is it = point to the "file" directory. Perhaps related to #2 2.. If you use the "No Frames" theme and publish, the index.htm file = redirects the page to the "file" directory, where this isn't a = default.htm/index.htm. A little strange. 3.. I switched back to the "Frames" theme and published, everything = looks fine (except #1). However, when you use the Search (I used the = Swish-e ) an error comes up, Zlib.dll is missing. I copied it in from an = older eclass, and then got the message "index.swish-e" was missing. As = this is a Project specific file, It wouldn't do me much good to copy it = in. I then copied in the entire CGI-bin directory from a previous = version and got more errors, so obviously this is not the solution. = Ideas? 4.. Funny thing about #1, If you open a course previously created in = another version of Eclass, you can edit the course page. That's a start, I will re-install and see if I can help pinpoint #3. I'll look into this, but it looks like the course page is not being=20 created or saved for some reason? It points to the file directory=20 because it can't find the file. I'll check into the missing zlib.dll file, but as for index.swish-e,=20 just click on the "Publish to CD" icon to re-create it. Unfortunately,=20= like with Greenstone, you have to update the entire index at one time,=20= so I don't automatically update it when pages have changed. Then, from=20= there, you should be able to use the default b4 cgi-bin dir, just=20 adding in zlib.dll. However, SWISH-E already has experimental support for "incremental=20 indexing", which means you can add/remove content to the index without=20= having to rebuild the entire index. Hopefully by the end of the year=20 that will mean that whenever you save a page, I can automatically=20 update the index. =3D) > 4. Yes, #1 is definitely related to a bug when creating a new course. Will=20= do some more investigating and let you know! Hi Kevin, I downloaded the new version of Eclass. The bugs with the front page and = the html editor seem to be fixed. Also, the theme/template looks much = better. Problems/issues 1.. The search using swish-e is still not working correctly. When = publishing, I get the missing Zlib.dll error, and then when trying to = view my results, the index.swish-e is not there. = "C:\DOCUME~1\BJCAME~1\MYDOCU~1\ECLASS~1\demo3\cgi-bin\..\index.swish-e = does not exist". I added the zlib.dll from another eclass, and there was no error on = publishing, but the same result when viewing results of the search = "Index file = C:\DOCUME~1\BJCAME~1\MYDOCU~1\ECLASS~1\demo3\cgi-bin\..\index.swish-e = does not exist." The file does not exist anywhere in my publication What is going on with the path before index.swishe-e? "\..\" Does that = mean it is trying to go back to the root directory of the EClass?=20 2.. I am having problems using web pages and a quiz pages in the same = course. Depending on the order, the latter takes on the formers' = display/properties. It is funny because if you add a regular eclass = page, often the problems are fixed. However, it can happen if you use a = quiz page and then an eclass page. I am probably not explaining this = right, so I have uploaded a demo course to my site for you to view/play = with. http://payson.tulane.edu/staff/bjcameron/demo3/. I have also uploaded a copy of the errlog.txt http://payson.tulane.edu/staff/bjcameron/errlog.txt 3.. I am still getting the Dr. Watson Error page. = http://payson.tulane.edu/staff/bjcameron/error2.jpg Is this possibly a = memory issue? I have noticed it mostly happens when I have had the = computer running for a while and I have several applications open. Still = my computer has over 522mb of RAM, I would think a few apps wouldn't = hurt. I will keep working on it and let you know if I see anything else or = patterns in the above problems. EClass has always=20 provided some checking to make sure you don't use the same filename,=20 but it didn't check to see if files with other extensions have the same=20= filename. (i.e. NewPage.ecp and NewPage.html were allowed) However,=20 both of those would get published as "NewPage.htm" and so one would=20 overwrite the other. Fixed. > 3. It is a memory issue, but it's not due to your computer lacking memory.=20= The issue is basically that the program is trying to access some code=20 that is no longer in memory. My guess is that if you close the server=20 while it's performing an operation, it does this because it doesn't=20 "shut down" in the correct order. Hi Kevino, Greenstone is not working properly with EClass 2.5b4. Besides the = problem I mentioned yesterday: 1.. The home.dm macro does not display the Eclass start page "Start = Eclass", but rather the standard Greenstone interface. =20 2.. The EClass directory is not in the "C:\Program = Files\gsdl\tmp\<publication ID>\gsdl=20 3.. Finally, If you search your results, the "pub" directory is double = entered, for example http://127.0.0.1:1026/eclass/pub/pub/New_Page_2.htm , while in the = past it was http://127.0.0.1:1026/eclass/pub/New_Page_2.htm I had problems with Theme manager, See: http://payson.tulane.edu/staff/bjcameron/error3.jpg http://payson.tulane.edu/staff/bjcameron/errlog.txt This occurred after I copied my template from a previous EClass, bad = template? The worse thing is that I seem to have corrupted my Default = (frames) template. While using a Bad template is not Eclass' fault, = people will write bad templates, and EClass needs to recover...no? Now, Whenever I click on Default (frames) it gives me a "preparing to = update E-Class", but nothing happens.=20 If I publish or preview, In the "main" frame, I get "cannot find page". = I copied the themes directory over from another installation, and that = still hasn't fixed the problem. The problem itself seems to be isolated = to that one eclass. I have since opened other eclasses and they update = and refresh the theme fine. <<<<Later>>> I tried copying the same template again, and it worked fine. I think the = key may be that you need to close eclass first, then copy the template = in. Doesn't make sense though as the changes don't occur until after you = "Refresh the Theme". I found a fix for the search using Swish-e. I copied an old version of = the zlib.dll into C:\Program Files\EClass.Builder 2.5b4\SWISH-E = directory. Now everything works fine, (indexing and searching). What is = up with the Zlib1.dll and zlib-1.dll that are currently in that = directory? Have a good weekend, BJ |

Hi Kevin, Problems 1.. Eclass is having problems with hotwords. When a new EClass is = created it automatically creates the Files directory. However when you = want to hotword link a word to a file in this directory the path is to = File, even though you selected the file from the Files directory. = Obviously, it then can't find the page. FYI, the swishe.conf also points = to the File directory. 2.. Not sure why this happens, but when I used a flash file for a = video in the page editor, the audio portion does not play. I opened it = in IE, and it works fine. Also, the size is quite small, anyway to = adjust that? 3.. I used the same Flash file and I put it into the "Present" = directory and used it as a Presentation. It worked great in the EClass = IE window, but when I tried to view it using the server, I get "goobly = gook". If I view it without the server it runs fine.=20 4.. The same exact thing happens if you use a PPT with the server. 5.. The search function isn't searching the section text, only titles = of the pages. =20 Comment/suggestion: 1.. Is there any way, other than editing the publication file, to get = an image into the quiz page? Not all questions are best asked using only = words. For example you may need a supply/demand curve. Hi BJ, Sorry, sent the previous message too soon. What I meant to say is that=20= your theme problems are actually also stemming from Greenstone issues.=20= I will have this fixed for the next version. As for Zlib-1.dll, I'll have to look into this more, but at least at=20 one point it was actually giving me errors when I had zlib.dll in there=20= saying I needed zlib1.dll instead. So I renamed the file and it worked=20= fine. I'll figure out what is going here as well. This problem (at least the one I saw in the error log) was also related=20= to Greenstone. It is also fixed. If you want to fix it in your custom=20 theme, open <EClass Program Dir>\themes\BJ_s.py and replace any=20 instance of "gsdlcollection" with "self.pub.pubid" (I added quotes for=20= clarity, don't put the quotes!) > Now, Whenever I click on Default (frames) it gives me a "preparing to=20= > update E-Class", but nothing happens. > If I publish or preview, In the=A0 "main" frame, I get "cannot find=20= > page". I finally figured this out - zlib1.dll and zlib-1.dll are *both*=20= needed by wvWare to index DOC files. Oddly enough, I simply made a copy=20= of the file, so these files seem to differ in name only. I added back=20 zlib.dll for SWISH-E (I must have zlib.dll somewhere on my PATH since I=20= don't get errors) and now everything is back to normal. Thanks, Kevin |

Hi Kevino, Here is another small bug, it occurs when you publish to CD-ROM using the Greenstone search. When Greenstone has finished indexing it opens to the default Eclass Directory. Shouldn't it open to the C:\Program Files\gsdl\tmp\<eclass course name> directory? BJ William 'BJ' Cameron Payson Center Tulane University |

Hi Kevino, Bugs: 1.. This is a very silly bug, but...the EClass page editor has a hard = time recognizing file extensions with capital letters. For example, it = would see and use mod1.htm and could see, but not use mod1.HTM. For = some reason this is only text. 2.. Another petty bug, on the quiz page, the question boxes change = style. For #1 they use radio buttons, for #2 (square) they use check = boxes, then back to radio buttons for #3. >>>Later<<< I think I understand why you did this. If there are multiple "Correct" = answers, it uses check boxes(#2), if there is only one correct answer it = uses radio buttons(#1,#3). I think it is probably best to use check = boxes for all, keep it consistent. 3.. If you preview or publish a course that has not been search = enabled, you get this error message: http://payson.tulane.edu/staff/bjcameron/error4.jpg=20 From the errlog.txt: There was an unexpected error publishing your course. Details on = the error message are located in the file: C:\Program = Files\EClass.Builder 2.5b4\errlog.txt, or on Mac, the error message can = be found by viewing /Applications/Utilities/Console.app. Traceback (most recent call last): File "<string>", line 895, in PublishEClass OSError: [Errno 2] No such file or directory The course then opens fine. Once you publish with search enabled = (swish-e) it works fine and no error messages. 4. When I try searching with Swish-e, I get this error: http://payson.tulane.edu/staff/bjcameron/error5.jpg (Today, I am at the office on WIN XP) Nothing in the Errlog.txt file = about this. 5. I have not been able to publish to PDF, nothing happens. I have = uploaded the errlog.txt file, there appears to be something at the end: http://payson.tulane.edu/staff/bjcameron/errlog.txt I will try Greenstone and themes tomorrow. BJ |

Hi Kevino, With all the new and different builds of 2.5b4, is it possible to differentiate them some how? A build number in startup or in the help menu? People may download and install an earlier version and then forget about it. I am currently testing this on three machines (currently three versions) and I know I am going to have problems. My vote is for all checkboxes, since you can't use radio buttons with Multiple answers. I think consistency for both instructor and student are necessary in the interface. Also if the instructor places the term "click all that apply" in the question and only one applies, it gives part of the answer away for those who know about web programming. I know this is probably too late for this version, but would it be possible to get "new" and "edit" for all of the media (image, audio, video) in the "Page Editor"? I imagine you could setup the editors in the "System Preferences". It would be really handy, especially when creating new courses to create pieces as you go. Maybe eventually, we could have a TALM-Toolkit version, where it would be pre-configured...just an idea. Off to work on the latest version... Hi Kevino, I am using the latest version (built last night? 04-07-04) on a Win 2K = machine. Problems/bugs: 1. After you submit a quiz, nothing happens. Using Checkboxes huh? It = looks much better. 2. When you preview/publish a new course (both search and non = search), the menu (right frame) and joust menu (right bottom frame) are = not created. The non-frames theme works fine. 3. I am getting this error when I search with Swish-e: http://payson.tulane.edu/staff/bjcameron/error.jpg I fixed the problem by copying Zlib.dll into the ...\EClass = Projects\<my course>\cgi-bin\ directory. 4. If I am on the search page (Swish-e, non-frames) and I click on the = other pages from the JavaScript tree menu. They are not found because = the path is going to the cgi-bin. http://localhost:8000/cgi-bin/New_Page_10.htm 5. Not a bug, but an observation. When I switch back to frames theme, = and refresh the theme, menu.htm and menucntrl.htm are created. yea! 6. When using the Greenstone interface, some media (especially video, = audio and presentations) and pages took forever to load. I realize there = is nothing you can do about this, but perhaps a warning to other EClass = users. Also Greenstone has difficulty using file names that have spaces. 7. When creating a hotword link to an eclass file, sometimes (vague = enough for you?) it does not create the link. This is especially the = case if you insert media into the page editor for the newly created = hotword. I have thoroughly inspected the source code of the file and I = see nothing wrong with the word I want to link. I am still working out = the problem and I will send you more details. on another note, it would = be nice to be able to link to already existing eclass page and not just = a new one. >>later<< it might just be that one eclass page, I have deleted that = page and re-used the html file, and it works fine. I will keep an eye on = it. 8. I am still getting the Server/Dr. Watson problems, it may be = isolated to this computer as I have been crashing a lot lately. No it is = not Windows but a hardware problem. Hopefully, a new computer is in the = works.
