Well, it works like a charm, but some menu strings were missing - I'm using a german locale and it were all those strings where an umlaut has been part of.  It might be that cvs messed up the file encoding when I pulled sources from CVS (i'm using iso8859-15 on the console) - anyway I had to convert eboard.de.po to utf-8 since it was set to iso8859-15.  weird ..

Pango seems to expect utf-8 so I figured this must work and it did ;-)  I used vim for the conversion, load up the file, :set fenc=utf-8   and :write   iconv will probably do too..
