<div><font face="Arial" size="2">Hello - my name is Greg Elliott and
I’m currently researching the extent to which small companies can
engage in electronic commerce, (and specifically automated order
handling), using a base configuration of open standards,
freely-available software, a standard PC, and an internet connection.
<p class="MsoNormal">Your ebMail product seems ideally suited to the
target environment, and I therefore wish to set up and run the software
as part of an order handling simulation.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">In common with my target population of small
companies, I have only a limited understanding of the technical issues
- in particular, I’m unfamiliar with Java and Java-based applications.
Consequently, I’m experiencing problems successfully following your
Setup Guide.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Any assistance that you can offer would be greatly
appreciated. I have set out the details below.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Many thanks</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Greg Elliott</p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><strong>Background</strong></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">I have a PC running Windows 98. I have downloaded
and installed j2re1.4.2.01 to a sub-directory Java within my Program
Files directory. I have also downloaded the ebMail Binary Distribution
and unzipped it to a sub-directory ebMail within my Program Files
directory. (However, there is only a single directory “ebmail” - I do
not have “poPlugin”).</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><strong>Running ebMail</strong></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">What do I need to do in order to run ebMail from
Windows? I’ve tried opening the batch file EBMAIL.BAT, but I get an
input screen populated with identical rectangular symbols (control
characters?) and some zeros. Do I need to do anything else within the
JRE in order to run the application?.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><strong>Patch</strong></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">I also understand that I need to carry out a
patch. (Again, I haven’t done this before). Where do I need to create
the directory $JAVA_HOME/jre/lib/endorsed? (and is the $ symbol
correct?). I have located a file XALAN in the directory ebmail\lib - is
this the correct file to copy into the new directory?</p>
