I have just discovered xml-rpc and how easy it is to use. I recommend looking at it. What's more, it would make it very easy to make the server C/C++ and communicate with the client.

If we make this SOO easy that people have too much traffic to support, THEN we should worry about changing the protocol. Until that bright future arrives, I suggest we make everything as easy as possible to write and maintain.

I recommend not using XML for the protocol.
I don't think its advantages are worth the cost in efficiency.
