Yes, I know exactly what you mean... I have run into the same problem.
I've never thought about a possible solution, however. I use Emacs'
completion functions, and this is what they give you.
I'll start looking into it, though. It seems Emacs 22 has some new
completion capabilities which may prove interesting.
