In KiCad, I have created with PcbNew a circuit board, which has also 3d-modells of it's single electrical components (.wrl files). When I use the KiCad 3D-Viewer, I also see a 3D view as desired.
In FreeCad, I added the module FreeCAD-PCB (and I can see the PCB-workbench). But when I try to open the above mentioned KiCad file <name>.kicad_pcb, I can see on the Freecad-console the error message
No PCB border detected!
Total time: 0[s]
and no file .kicad_pcb file is loaded in FreeCad.

I just downloaded and compiled version from github and I do not have any problem similar to your. Probably (?) some board outlines in your project are not connected to each other. If you want you can upload your project so I can examine it.
