I can't even remember my first DHTML. It was back in the good old days when Netscape ruled the world and IE was version 3.0. I started making silly Layer movements using Netscape 4.0 Then I joined a web research team in the university. I had to find out how all that web stuf could be used in an educative manner. Building HTML interfaces interactive enought so you can study and learn with them. To go where no man had gone before, which is the point of research, after all. I had already done many cross-browser scripts when I first found Dan's tutorial. It was not even half what is now, then. I started copying and using the widgets, until they became too limited for what I had to do. A question arised: should I go back to do things my way, or should I help improving DynAPI so it is suitable for my new needs. That was about one year and a half ago. I've never read a book. I use them only for method reference. In my opinion it is only a matter of challenge: either you fail and sink or you emerge as a better code.
