SVG = Scalable Vector Graphics. As the name suggests it's a vector graphics format for the web. This means that you're no longer stuck with resolution-fixed pictures. Imagine a piece of graphic which contains a map. If it's in SVG format you'll be able to zoom in without quality loss.
