Apparently, the JavaScript engine in these browsers must either always return a value, or never return a value. Any file that can be read with the user's permissions is vulnerable, including the system password file. The bug affects both Windows and Unix versions of Communicator. Any HTML page can carry this exploit, including ones that are transmitted as an e-mail enclosure. Internet Explorer has not been reported to be vulnerable.
