Question about dynamic PEM electrolysis

    Hello Daniel

First of all congratulations for your software and thanks for making it open source.

I am trying to model a hydrogen process, with electrolyzers and fuel cells, both in steady state and in dynamic operations.
Back when I was a master student a few years ago, other process simulation software like Aspen Plus could not model the ionic reactions at the cathode and anode.

Does DWSIM provide electrochemical reactions please?
If yes, where can I get some guidance, in terms of property package and other useful information? e.g. Aqueous Electrolytes Property Package (Reaktoro Backend)
If not, can I develop some custom models on my own and add them in?

    Regards
    Sotiris

    Hi Sotiris,

DWSIM provides a sample for an electrolysis process which involves the usage of an excel spreadsheet to model the reactions. Take a look.

    Thanks for the reply, appreciated.
I'd love to help develop the sample file further for dynamic operations, when the electrolysers are coupled with variable renewable energy sources like solar PV or wind.

    Thank you Mr. Sotiris
I have seen the example of decomposing water into hydrogen and oxygen. But I did not understand how to create an excel sheet and how to change the input. Please, if you have any video , give a more explanation of this method.
    I appreciate your help
    regards

    Hi,
on SpreadsheetUO - Editor you will find a button "create new".
This will create an empty Excel sheet from the template.
With button "Edit" you can edit that table.

There are tabs "Input" and "Output" inside that Excel file.
Input tab will contain values from connected input streams.
In Input tab you also can add some parameters which are displayed in DWSIM later.
Results of your internal calculations are written to the Output tab.
During calculation, DWSIM is writing values to the UO, calculating the Excel file and reading back values from output.
Don't change structure of Input or Output as DWSIM is always writing and reading from/to the same cells.
Have a look into existing sample to see how it works.

    Gregor

      Hi,
Thanks for noting this option. I reviewed the example and I have question regard waste heat calculation. I think waste heat would be the heat above what would be to use to maintained the temperature of cell, and I think the thermoneutral heat should be calculate as waste heat, but in excel sheet i saw the standard potential was used for that. my question is how DWSIM is using the calculation? I wanna know if I use thermoneutral heat , is that the thing that DWSIM can consider that? I think the way that we calculate the waste heat should be depend on how DWSIM consider the waste heat. Based on the example it sounds the waste heat is considered as the heat goes to maintain the T of the cell, that's why it used the standard potential.
