    columbia93 - 2013-10-01

This is a new thread from my previous thread of issues with 2.5 and beta.

To refresh your memory, after burning a DVD for a series, episodes 1-3, I inserted another DVD and tried to burn 4-6. That burn failed. I've had an issue several times in the past where DVDStyler fails and won't work until it is reinstalled and, even then it many times takes several weeks to get it working again. After this fail, I installed the latest version and ran into problems unrelated to a fail. That was addressed in that thread so this continues with the fail.

As I wrote, I tried reinstalling 2.2 and above, to get a working program and nothing worked. I've cleared the registry, which I hate doing, and nothing seems to work. Today, I started with 1.8.0.2 and it worked; however, there was a very loud static that is not present in the movie. I then installed 1.8.2 and (accidentally) a different movie I had sitting in my Media Center and it worked.

I then installed 1.8.3. I decided to go back to the movie that worked with 1.8.0.2 to keep things consistent but the first sign of trouble was that most of the thumbnails in my recorded file were now "grey", including this movie. I opened it in the program with "Properties" and every frame was black. I used a different movie, one that wasn't greyed out, and the creation failed. Being optimistic, I installed 1.8.4.2 and the majority of movies were still greyed out and, using the movie from 1.8.2, which was successful, I tried again and it failed. This is the message on the screen after 30 minutes of sitting stalled.

INFO: 1 subtitles added, 0 subtitles skipped, stream: 33, offset: 1.00

    Add file to cache:C:\Temp\dvd-cache\entry001.vob
    Transcode video file: C:\Users\Public\Recorded TV\Freakonomics.wmv
Need encode: true, use mplex: false

This is so frustrating. I don't remember what version I was using before all of this craziness but it was likely 2.3 or something around that. The issue with the movies becoming unreadable by this program has never happened before.

There is a discrepancy in the versions. I initially wrote 1.8.4.2 because that's what it says in the Help/About; however, the version that I downloaded was 1.8.4.3. I reinstalled this version and again, the Help/About says 1.8.4.2,

Update: Installed 2.0 I created a DVD using a movie with a correct thumbnail and one with the grey. The correct one shows up correctly on the buttons and editing while the grey one shows black in the button thumbnail and in the Properties under Aspect and/or Chapters. It created the DVD and the both movies played - just black for chapter selection. I recreated the DVD with only the movie with the greyed out thumbnail. Again, it created but the thumbnail is black and I couldn't see anything on the Properties tab for the movie. FYI - all of my movies/series are in the .wmv format. Some were edited with Movie Maker and some with Freemake but ALL are the same format.

Update an hour later: Uninstalled everything and used CCleaner - again. Looking at my saved registries, it was back in December that I had a couple of weeks of uninstalling/reinstalling DVDStyler. So NOT fun! So now I installed 1.8.2 because it worked before. Guess what - now I have greyed out thumbnails in this version, too! I checked a folder for a series where 2 episodes were edited in Freemake and 2 in Movie Maker. The MM episodes are showing in DVDStyler while the Freemake edits are not. The ONLY difference between these 2 is, while both are saved in widescreen format, the Freemake edits are a slightly "wider" widescreen. Before, when everything was working, I'd noticed that the image buttons for Freemake showed wide without black sides while the MM edits didn't seem to show on those buttons in the correct aspect. For that reason, I've been preferring Freemake.

Movie Maker accepts .wmv format (obviously) and usually accepts the.mpg (WinTV convert), but not always. Freemake accepts a ton more - I use it (by choice) on most TV recordings from my WinTV app because of the conversion options (aspect ratio, stereo, etc.). WinTV records in .ts but I can set it to then convert to .mpg - which DVDStyler will not accept, which is why I have to either run it again through either Freemake or MM. Yeah, a lot of steps. A 1 hour show takes an additional 1 1/2 hours to convert to .mpg then .wmv to be able to take another hour to create in DVDstyler, when it works.

Again, the issue with the greyed out movies is new and only occurred tonight when I installed 1.8.3. After that, even earlier versions of DVDStyler resulted in greyed out thumbnails. As a note, whenever I install 2.0.1 or higher, I get a "connection problem' message at the end of the install. That's been happening since a few days ago when I started this whole process. Since I'm on TimeWarner, the connection isn't the internet. I've no idea what it means but I doubt there is much affect with re: to my problems as this message only shows in later versions.

Really? Because if you'll recall on my original thread, as well as THIS thread, I've installed 2.5x and 2.6 Beta and had to deal with faulty thumbnails and fails. So, not only is it not fixed, there are additional issues.

I've not touched this in a few days because I spent 2 entire days working on it to no avail. I can't get anything created/burned, which means I can't record anything new. Please just let me know when you get a working version, including thumbnails.

    Thx!
