The DVD Database Project / News: Recent posts

** Migrating to OpenDB **

For those of you that haven't been following the discussion forums, I thought that it would be a good idea for me to post a note here.

Jason Pell, one of the developers for dvddbp has put a lot of work into overhauling the database structure as well as the code itself to provide a more efficient and flexible architecture. This resulted in adding in a lot of requested features such as multiple media types, multi-language support, proxy support, true customization for items, to name a few. Therefore, as you can see since the structure supports more than just DVDs we needed to find ourselves a new name; OpenDB.... read more

Developers-- feature ideas discussion

Hey guys, I just wanted to leave a note here to check the dev forum (http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?forum_id=21832), since the forums have generally not been too active.
We're discussing some ideas for future features / changes / implementation ideas, etc. We'd like to hear your input too, so if you have something to add. Please feel free! :)

Oh, and for the rest of you (those of you that aren't project developers), we'd like to hear your ideas too! You're always welcome to post in the dvddbp forums or submit feature requests.... read more

Finally!

Sorry! It took quite a while to get this minor release out. I had exams to take... A big Thank you goes out to Tom Williams for hacking through my code and implementing the new search features. I'm still looking in to the logout problem. Unfortuantely some Sessions funtions don't work on my system as planned... I'm trying to do a workaround and kill them directly on the filesystem.... If you have any hints -> I'd be greatful!
See you
- Flurin

XML & IMDB Support

Currently I'm trying to integrate functions to use the IMDB info, which would make it easier to enter DVDs. I'm also planning to add a XML IMport / Export feature.

Change in PHP Support

I have decided to give up support for PHP versions older than 4.0.0. Its just to much hassle. The Live demo will be a hacked version until my provider will switch from PHP 4.0 Beta 2 to PHP 4.0.0

Announcing the Start of the DVD Database Project

1) What is the DVD Database Project?
2) What is a CLUGS(Closed User Group Library System)?

Basically every (approved) user can enter his DVDs he owns and he is willing to lend out to other people. The user can also browse trough all already existing DVDs from other users, to see if they are available to be lent out or if they have already been lent out. If he finds one he likes, he can then send an email to the owner and ask him for that DVD. It;s an easy and efficient way to keep track of other peoples collection.
2) A Closed User Group Library System (CLUGS) bases on two things:
- People willing to share media with others
- The implied trust in other people because they have been aproved by someone you trust
Basically one opens up his own personal library of books, cds etc to others, while at the same time getting access to their libraries. The big thing though is that he gets the security that the other people are of decent origin. He will only be allowed in if someone else knows him and can "vouch" for him. (If Jill wants to join and she knows Jack ( who is a member already). Then Tom who is also a member can be sure that if Jack trusts her, he can trust her too. This implied trust makes it relatively secure for you to join and open your personal libraries. A CUGLS makes sense within a community which has some geographic connection, eg students of the same uni, people from the same workplace. Why? Because the medias will also need to be exchanged physically.
