Hi, I actually sent something earlier, but I cannot find any evidence that it actually was sent correctly, so I am sending it again. I have setup CVS access for OpenDb and am looking for interested people to start working on enhancements to the software using CVS instead of very inefficient method of sending me patches. This also means that I am relinquishing some of the control I have over what goes into OpenDb. Obviously I will still carry out a review of what goes into each release, but this would also be undertaken with other developers who are interested in being a part of the release process and who understand the structure of OpenDb and want to see it grow. Please check the forum topics: http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?forum_id=451405 http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?thread_id=1243202&forum_id=451405 http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?thread_id=1243208&forum_id=115845 http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?thread_id=1174700&forum_id=115845 I am also looking for a website designer to completely redesign the OpenDb project website as its not all that attractive (lets face it :-) I would really like to see this project become less about me as the project admin, and more about a committed group of developers who want to see it grow. Dear Open Source developer I am doing a research project on "Fun and Software Development" in which I kindly invite you to participate. You will find the online survey under http://fasd.ethz.ch/qsf/. The questionnaire consists of 53 questions and you will need about 15 minutes to complete it. With the FASD project (Fun and Software Development) we want to define the motivational significance of fun when software developers decide to engage in Open Source projects. What is special about our research project is that a similar survey is planned with software developers in commercial firms. This procedure allows the immediate comparison between the involved individuals and the conditions of production of these two development models. Thus we hope to obtain substantial new insights to the phenomenon of Open Source Development. With many thanks for your participation, Benno Luthiger PS: The results of the survey will be published under http://www.isu.unizh.ch/fuehrung/blprojects/FASD/. We have set up the mailing list fa...@we... for this study. Please see http://fasd.ethz.ch/qsf/mailinglist_de.html for registration to this mailing list. _______________________________________________________________________ Benno Luthiger Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich 8092 Zurich Mail: benno.luthiger(at)id.ethz.ch _______________________________________________________________________ |

Hello, I have a quick question and not sure if I'm even writing to the right = person or persons or not but, my question is. How do you setup new = users? I did everything that the read-me told me to do by setting up my = own account, etc. and don't see any way to add a new user. Should I have = an actual admin menu or something? Or should I just add a user in the = SQL database table? (I actually tried that and keep getting a "login = failed" page). Thanx for any help that anyone can give me on this. Steve |

Yes, it is possible with the existing v1.45 code if you simply encode your username and password into the url... but it is sort of a hack. For example, if your username is 'scott' with password 'mydvds'.. you could try using: http://www.scottsdvd.com/dvd/verify?name=scott&pass=mydvds But depending on what you want to do, this would limit other functionality to the rest of the program since it would be bypassing the frame. If you want a better solution, edit the "index.html" file and replace the "dvd.php" with the above address. Keep in mind that your users would still be susceptible to the "timeout", so you may want to increase the $timeout_in_seconds in the common.php as well Does this answer your question? -- Marc (shaddw) -----Original Message----- From: dvd...@li... Hi, As part of the move to the OpenDb project, I have created a new sourceforge site. I have added Flurin, Marc and myself as members. Anyone else wishing to join must contact one of us, as I am not sure who is still interested from DVDDBP. Flurin: I am not trying to take over all of this, I just want to get things rolling. I have released OpenDb-0.17p3.zip to the sourceforge site, although it will take a while for the files to appear (up to 30 minutes I have been told!) I have also added a opendb-devel mailing list to replace the dvddbp-devel mailing list. http://sourceforge.net/projects/opendb/ Question: Is anyone (apart from Marc) actually reading these emails? Hi, I have released a third patch to 0.17 version. This fixes a problem with inserting item attributes. The field names were not being generated based on s_attribute_type and order_no as they were in previous releases. This has now been fixed. I also added 5 extra cdtracks to CD (20 tracks total) to support most cd titles. Hi, I also forgot to mention the following change: * DefaultIndex page of index.php instead of index.html. A copy of index.html, name index.html.old can be renamed and used if required. Most webservers who support php, should support a php DefaultIndex file. This change means that the title of the frameset can be programatically set from common.php as well. Hi, OpenDb-0.17 has been released to much fanfare ;-) and includes many bugfixes/features, and probably some new bugs too :-) A small change to the way site-plugins work, to support passing multiple attribute values. Checkout site.txt for more information. Also includes a new input type widget (See functions/input_type.php): single_select_or_value(display_mask,length) This widget will display a SELECT object if the specified value is null or matches one of the %value% lookup's, otherwise the field will be a readonly field with a hidden to store the value. I am using this for the CD type, so that the freedb.org specific genre can be supported. There is no defined list of allowed genres for the specific genre... Changelog: * Many small cosmetic fixes. Plus some aggravating bugs with the input widgets, especially when used with site-plugins. * Fixes to IMDB for page not found errors. * A fix for the search page, where owner searches were not working as expected. You can now search by all attribute_types, where before this was not possible. * All new item icons contributed by Marc Powell (Thanks Marc :-) * Initial cut of freedb.org site plugin. * Extra attributes and cleanup of existing ones as they relate to item types. Please start with a new database and import movie.sql to get all the benefits that 0.17 offers. As usual the url is: http://www.geocities.com/jasonpell/opendb/ By the way I have registered a Sourceforge project: "opendb" and I am planning to start using this, much like dvddbp was used for the old product. I imagine that Myself, Marc and Flurin should be the administrators at this point! Hi, I am currently working on OpenDb-0.17. This release will include a site-plugin for www.freedb.org and better HTTP support. I have discarded my original functions/http.php for a better alternative utilising the extremely impressive php class Snoopy. Url: http://snoopy.sourceforge.net I had to add a check() function to the class to do a HEAD request, but other than that this class works really nicely, and does not lock up like my original effort did; when I was trying to work with www.freedb.org. I have done a lot of the parsing functionality for www.freedb.org, I just have to integrate into the plugin interface properly. Hi, I have released 0penDb-0.16. This release contains a small fix to user_admin.php, which was actually delivered as OpenDb-0.15p1. But the major change is a modification to the 'review' table structure: ------------------------- Description of change -------------------------------- OpenDb-0.16 is a cleanup of the review table structure. Now instead of the date column it includes a update_on timestamp. The nice thing about a single timestamp in a table, is that the value of the timestamp is automatically updated when the record is inserted. It is then a matter of using DATE_FORMAT(update_on, 'format...') and we can display nicely formatted dates in the item_display form. The cool thing is that this format can be easily modified (in functions/review.php) because the records are not being saved in any particular format. I also modified the order by so that newer reviews are displayed first. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- You can find it at the usual place: http://www.geocities.com/jasonpell/opendb/ Cheers Jason -- Vegan Philosopher Programmer _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp |

Hi, OpenDb-0.15 released. This release contains database changes from 0.14p2, so you should start with a new database. This has lots of changes and fixes. Full site-plugin support finished. Fully supports compulsory elements and numeric input validation. Lots of other stuff. Check out site.txt and changes.info.txt for more information. You will need to load the sql/movie.sql script into your new database. Marc, I have submitted OpenDb-0.14p2.zip to my website: http://www.geocities.com/jasonpell/opendb/ This update contains some small fixes. It also contains the database insert statements (in movie.sql) for Laser Disc. Adds support to search by media type. But does not actually give LOV of types, only checkbox so you can use the search field to search by. You can use wildcards, e.g. %D to get types: CD,VCD,LD,DVD! Adds ability for owner to cancel reservations made by other users. Renamed nav.php to menu.php to better reflect purpose of file. Fixed up some inconsistencies in movie.sql. I will continue working on the changes I outlined in a previous email after I get back from my 3 day holiday. Hi,
Version 0.13 includes several important bugfixes, especially
those pointed out by Marc. Also it includes experimental
recoded version of IMDB which has been moved into a site
plugin structure. The HTTP access to IMDB for direct
access has also been improved. It now uses fsockopen
instead of fopen. For url checks I now use the HEAD command
instead of GET, which should improve performance in that
area.
PLEASE START WITH A NEW DATABASE. S_ITEM_TYPE and
S_ATTRIBUTE_TYPE have had structural changes since 0.12.
As I have stated on my website, this should be the last
structural change necessary. It was require to support
site plugin structure.
Anyway here is the url:
http://www.geocities.com/jasonpell/opendb/
Please let me know any major bugs. I am trying to stamp
them all out as I go along, but no doubt I have missed
some nasty ones.
I hope to have the stats.php and item_details.php page
back to their old selfs for 0.14. (Improved stats,
and link to external source site - imdb on item_details)
Thanks
Jason

Hi, We can just add a new s_attribute_type of TRAILER and link it to DVD,VHS,VCD via the s_item_attribute_type table. It is all user data now. No need to modify the item table ever again. (Fingers crossed!) With the move of IMDB to a plugin (OpenDb 0.13), it is just a matter of parsing for the trailer in the imdb plugin and passing the trailer urlparam to the item_input.php for adding to the database. I already have modified item_details.php to request that the imdb plugin control the display of the imdb site item link, via a call to the new site/functions.php get_item_link_block($site_type, $item_id) function. It should a small matter of modifying the imdb plugin config.php $site_item_link_block variable to also show a link to the trailer. I will add the TRAILER type to the 0.13 release, but I will leave it to you to modify the imdb site plugin to actually pass it to item_input.php. Hi, I am starting to clean up all the new code. I arrived at a comfortable function and variable naming standard that in most cases (at least functions) I am sticking to. I am also in process of moving IMDB support into a plugin structure, so that support for other Movie/CD/Library of congress,etc sites can be added and used as well as or instead. Stay tuned during the next few days for 0.13 which will include all this, plus some small fixes to previous versions. Is anyone actually reading these emails, or am I wasting my time? Hi, I have released OpenDb-0.12 which fixes some problems with reviews. It also offers full http support for direct connections. The bug which causes exact title matches not to be returned has as far as I can tell been eradicated. I now use fsockopen and connect to the host. If I encounter a "Location:" header then I redirect to that and load that url instead. I am hoping someone will take a look at this stuff and let me know what they think. Hi, I have posted an update to OpenDb. Now version 0.11. This version includes an initial version of the Search page. I am sure some parts of the site have broken while I have been working tonight, so be aware of this if you try it out. Please email me if you find any particularly nasty bugs, while trying this out! Tonight I also further modified the User Administration section to get rid of the password.php and user_details.php. These files were there to administer the current user. I have now modified the nav.php link to call up the global User administration php file instead, passing in the uid=$user_id. This may have introduced some security issues, but in the long run, it does make things a little easier. I have also applied some of bkhappy ideas of streamlining the code, namely moving functions into functions/ directory and some includes into an includes/ directory. The common.php for one has been moved into the includes directory. I have also introduced includes/header.php and includes/footer.php which standardise the top of each page. The footer allows us to standardise the end of each page with a copyright notice, or something else if we want, currently, it is just "</body></html>". Anyway, as I said this is a work in progress. I have however fixed up the DVD,VCD,VHS so that they should all be working nicely. These three types also integrate nicely with IMDB. If you are interested in my database restructure, take a look at the changes.info.txt file included in the archive. Hope you like. I will be adding more advanced stats and the item type/item attribute admin forms when I get the chance. Hi,
I know I promised that OpenDB would be ready, but it is
not quite! I still have to fix the Search and Stats
pages.
I also have some added functionality that will be "Coming Soon",
so that I can get this out a little quicker.
For example: Query By Example will be a new feature to go
along with Search, plus some admin forms for the new items
and item attributes/lookups.
Anyway, all seems to be going well, I have VCD,DVD,VHS and CD
all working fine, and it would be an easy thing to add BOOK
or ?????? (something that can be leant!) to it as well. All
you need to define is the item type and its attributes, the
rest is done for you within the new system. (Admin pages to
facilitate this will be part of final release!)
If you really want to take a look, a preview is available at:
http://www.geocities.com/jasonpell/opendb/
Please do NOT send me email about the versions you download
from this site, as they are is not a finished product.
When it is finished, I will of course let you all know.
PLEASE REMEMBER TO START WITH A NEW DATABASE FOR OPENDB.
DO NOT INSTALL OVER DVDDBP PHP CODE EITHER, AS THEY DO NOT
BEHAVE WELL TOGETHER.
Marc Powell has provided a upgrade.php script, which I will
augment for release, so that you can migrate the USER and DVD
tables. But this is broken, due to extra database changes I
made after Marc code it.
You can of course send me positive comments about the state
of OpenDb development :-)
Cheers
Jason

Hi,
Please disregard, I decided I could not wait any longer.
I have finished the function. For your information,
please find it included below, slightly different and more
powerful than I originally specified:
//
// Will return an array of the following form:
// name=>function_name, args=>array(args)
//
function get_prc_input_type($input_type)
{
$start = strpos($input_type, "(");
if($start !== FALSE)
{
// Now we have something to parse.
$name = substr($input_type, 0, $start);
$end = strrpos($input_type, ")");
if($end>$start)//Otherwise a fuckup...
{
// Now we have the args, lets tokenise them.
// Does not support args with "," included in value.
$args = substr($input_type, $start+1, $end-($start+1));
$tok = strtok($args, ",");
while ($tok !== FALSE){
$arr[] = $tok;
$tok = strtok(",");
}
}
}
else // name without arguments.
$name = $input_type;
return array (name=>$name, args=>$arr);
}
Thanks anyway.
Cheers
Jason
