Nope, certainly far from dead.
Recently jasonpell has been putting in a lot of work to overhaul the database structure and restructure the project for expansion (meaning, adding support for other media types, checkout features, lots of more stuff that has been requested by other users). This does mean however that we will most likely migrate to new project name since the next version will not be exclusivly for the dvd media type. :)
Stay posted, version 2.0 is well on its way to an official release soon.

This release provides an upgrade path from OpenDb and although the version number is below 1.0, the release is fairly stable.
Most important of all, the database structure is very stable. Any changes to database structure will be the introduction of completely new tables which will not impact current users at all.
Give it a try

Just to clarify. When I say it will not impact current users, I actually mean that there will be no need in the future to convert existing datastructures to a new format as you have to do to convert from dvddbp -> opendb. Obviously I cannot be 100% certain, but I really think that the database structure in opendb is extremely flexible and will offer users the sort of flexibility they have been looking for!
