  Which codec is needed?
  
  After changing the tivo stream into DVD or into standard MPEG, I try and play the file. I get a missing codec error.

  Do you have a DVD-ROM on your computer? Are you able to play other MPEG-2 files? You need to "purchase" a DVD codec for Windows. Try here: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/windowsxp/dvdplay.aspx
