FYI I use 37b dump on a debian system.

The default mt that come with is identifies like this:
[root@aline backup]# mt --version
GNU mt version 2.4.2


However, there is also a package avaliabe called mt-st:
[root@aline backup]# apt-get -s install mt-st
Reading Package Lists... Done
Building Dependency Tree... Done
The following NEW packages will be installed:
  mt-st
0 packages upgraded, 1 newly installed, 0 to remove and 51  not upgraded.
Inst mt-st (0.7-2 Debian:3.0r3/stable)
Conf mt-st (0.7-2 Debian:3.0r3/stable)

Might this be of any benefit?
