Playing with the blocksize parameter (-b) can dramatically improve the transfer rate (since dump always writes data - to the remote or local tape - in chunks of size equals to the blocksize parameter). I use myself -b 32 (instead of the default, which is 10). Of course, this can also slow down a bit the traffic on your local net, but you are the one who decide what you want...
