DTV moves into view

DTV, formerly a part of the "Tetsujin's PalmOS Development" project at XNot, has now moved to SourceForge and taken its first steps toward release.

For those with limited experience with PalmOS, it is a system on which tools are fairly scarce, and nearly always available only as commercial software. DTV is the first project of the Tetsujin PalmOS Development project to address this problem. DTV's basic features are intended to conquer a number of the classic limitations of the software included with PalmOS - record size, categorical organization, and limited interoperability.

At its core, DTV is an implementation of a Unix-like filesystem and filesystem browser for PalmOS. When complete, DTV will include support for a number of "Official" DTV file types, including a DOC-like text type, graphical file types, etc. The availability of these file types and the hierarchical organization will allow users to manage data in ways formerly available on very few PalmOS programs. It is also hoped that, as a result of DTV's open nature under the GPL, that it will be used as a common data format for other applications on the system, such as compilers/interpreters, systems which require data transferred to the device in PC formats, etc.

Currently, DTV is at an early stage of its development - text files of up to 32K are supported, but hierarchical data structure is not.
