Hi, Thank you very much for the help, just to clarify, the transformer and substation are fine , its just the load and line values that are resulting in zero power readings? Thanks

  • Davis Montenegro Davis Montenegro posted a comment on discussion Help

Hello, I recommend reviewing your line constants and load values—you're seeing significant voltage drops between line terminals, which indicates an issue. I performed a quick validation by disabling all loads, and the voltages still dropped below 0.9 per unit across the model. This suggests that the model requires a thorough review. For line constants in low voltage models you can use the following as reference: https://sourceforge.net/p/electricdss/code/HEAD/tree/trunk/Version8/Distrib/IEEETestCases/LVTestCase/...

Hi, My apologies I wasn't very clear, the frequency has been changed deliberately as I am modelling a uk network. My problem is that i dont seem to be getting any power flow in my network despite connecting everything up. I presume this is most likely due to how i have connected my substation? or do i need a separate generator

Hi, I am trying to build a simple low voltage distribution network composed of a substation, transformer and series of buses connected to single phase loads. The substation, transformer and loads have all been changed to 50Hz, with the substation providing 11kV (3Ph), and the transformer 11kv/0.4kv (3ph) with all loads (1ph) rated at 230V/8KW/PF=1. Voltage/current and power meters have been added to the load buses however all meter readings come back as zero. Any suggestions for whats causing this...

This analysis is made in the frequency domain and there are no dynamics involved. The results you are seeing in the report are in the steady statem which may fall into the Ik range. However, OpenDSS does not follow a specific standard for this analysis, it is up to you to verify how close it is to the standards you are studying. Best,

Thanks, Davis. Those references were really helpful in understanding the fault study mode methodology. However, I still have a question (forgive my ignorance, I'm a beginner electrical engineering student): what type of short-circuit current is provided by the fault study mode report? Comparing it to the short-circuit current graph from IEC 60909-0, what value would it be? Would it be Ik'' (initial symmetrical short-circuit current), ip (peak short-circuit current), or Ik (permanent short-circuit...

  • Davis Montenegro Davis Montenegro posted a comment on discussion Help

Hello, The fault study differs from a standard snapshot analysis that includes a fault. On one hand, the fault study follows a simplified approach, where the circuit model is energized by a small current injection at the connection point of each PCE. Each PCE is represented within the Y bus matrix by its Y primitive matrix. By injecting approximately 1 Amp at each PCE connection point, the resulting power flow solution reveals the short-circuit impedance (Zsc) at that location, as it can be derived...

Davis, Thanks for the tip I would also like to ask a question about short-circuit studies with OpenDSS. 1- First, I would like to know what is the difference between the short-circuit current values shown in the Fault Study Interface and in the report generated by the "show fault" command. Is it Initial symmetrical short-circuit current Ik" or steady-state short-circuit current Ik or another type of short-circuit current? 2- Second, I would like to know which standard OpenDSS uses to perform short-circuit...

Hi, Sure, this is doable. In this case one of the generators will work as reference and the other will be model as "PV" nodes (generator model 3). We have examples for this type of implementation using transmission systems, but the same principles will work in this case, check it out: https://sourceforge.net/p/electricdss/code/HEAD/tree/trunk/Version8/Distrib/Examples/NCIM/Xmission_System_Kundur2Area/ Best,

Thank you very much Davis, this was very helpful. Still regarding this project, I would like to clarify a doubt about generators. This electrical system I sent in the attachment is an isolated system powered only by 3 turbo generators. How can I model this system using only the generators as the power source.

  • Davis Montenegro Davis Montenegro posted a comment on discussion Help

Hello, In this case you are probably aiming at a QSTS simulation. For that, the VSD can be modeled as a load model 5 (rectifier) it is a simple model and works well for modeling rectifiers like the ones you find in electronic loads. Then, with DSS-G you can record the voltages at the buses during the simulation (see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gxBrClL0jLY ), which will record all the voltages during the simulation. Otherwise, to record other values you can use monitors to focus on specific areas...

Hello Davis, Thanks for your reply. In response to your questions, The purpose of the study is to check the voltage levels on the system busbars, check the load on transformers and cables, and analyze the current profile and maximum currents to size the equipment. Hi Silvio, The sub folder is created when there is an energy meter present in the model. OpenDSS/OpenDSS-G will create a sub-folder with the name of the Energy Meters within the model, and in these folders you'll find the elements within the meter's zone ( see https://opendss.epri.com/MeterZones.html ). For the error you are getting, it is normally given that the model hasn't been solved by the time the query was performed. For that, I would solve the model first and then try the query again. I hope...

Dear Davis, The keyboard reconfiguration works well—thank you for that. However, I have noticed a new issue when introducing new elements to the electric system and saving the project. DSS-G automatically creates a new directory named "sub" to store some of the original files being imported from OpenDSS. In this specific case of the new transformer was added to the system. When I attempt to edit it using the Inspector option, DSS-G throws the error shown in the attached image. I also observed that...

  • Davis Montenegro Davis Montenegro posted a comment on discussion Help

Hello, Yes, this is an issue related to the regional configuration. OpenDSS by default uses the dot character (.) as decimal separator. OpenDSS-G on the other hand, uses the local computer configuration, in your case since your laptop is using comma (,). This results confusing for OpenDSS. Sorry abut that. The solution is quite simple, you'll have to change your language settings in Windows and set the dot character as the decimal number separator. This is explained here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9RwYdUyLNtI...

Hello, This is an access problem. I wonder: Have you installed the program at the default folder (ProgramData) or did you decide to change the installation folder to "Program Files"? If so, that's the problem. To solve it, uninstall the program and reinstall using the default values. The problem is that if installed within the "Program Files" folder, Windows will limit the program access to the internal database unless the program is executed using Administrator privileges (right click -> Run as...

Hello, Well, this is because OpenDSS is a general purpose frequency domain simulator, meaning some specifics need to be implemented by the users normally using external interfaces such as TCP/IP (OpenDSS-G), COM/DLL or modify the code inside. For that, let me ask: What is the purpose of the simulation? Is it QSTS? Dynamics? Harmonics? What's the simulation resolution (model scale, detail?) What is he phenomena you are trying to observe? Let's start with those questions to better understand your request....

  • Roger Dugan Roger Dugan posted a comment on discussion Help

The model is already 3-phase. What you need to add is harmonic spectra (Spectrum object) for each load. There is already a default spectrum defined for each PC element so, minimally, all you need to do is: Solve ! solve the power flow Solve mode=harmonics Be sure you have some Monitor elements distributed around the circuit. The Monitor devices will be automatically sampled after the solution at each frequency. Of course, to make it more interesting, you will probably want to change some of the default...
