the addition of an LCD on one of the MCBSP of the 5509 will make the dspdap look great
many LCDs are out there which are easy to interface, have slim look and large display area
(e.g. the Nokia6100 has 132xRGBX132 pixels with 2K colors...requires only 3lines+1GPIO line for interface
and writing the driver is pretty simple....I've played a lot with it, may be I can contribute)
note that the addition of the LCD will not increase the PCB size.
also, to further reduce the PCB I recommend using smaller SMD components (for ex. resistors and capacitors can be in 603 instead of 1206 in DSPdap1.) I'm working on the PCB(7.5x4.5cm form factor) using EAGLE5.1 from the DSPdap2 schema Roger has posted, but with a little modification. I may post a screen shot of my progress here.
