Here is another patch for dspam.cgi that deals with the delivery of false positives from the quarantine. It is a patch on top of the recent quarantine file locking patch I submitted. It allows for specifying in configure.pl an external command for delivering false positives. If this command is not defined, the patch has no effect, other than some optional additional logging. For us, this is a script that first attempts to retrain/deliver with dspam as normal. But then the script tries to verify if the message was actually delivered, and if not, it will try to deliver the command directly (for instance, with procmail). This external script is quite site specific. Background: If the DSPAM signature of a message cannot be found in the database (most often because it has expired and has been cleaned from the database), the dspam command will exit with a successful status even though it does not deliver the message. Long ago, we had several unhappy professors after they returned from sabbatical and attempted to deliver old messages in their quarantines. So far, it doesn't seem to introduce any expected behavior. As to seeing if it does what it's supposed to do, that will take some time. I've never experienced total quarantine loss, just reports of lost email when retraining 2 more more messages from the history tab. Seems to not be easily reproducible issue. -Troy On 1/7/2013 3:23 PM, Tom Hendrikx wrote: > @Troy: If you can test Tods patch and see if it does what it's supposed > to fix, we have at least 2 persons vouching for the patch. |

I've added iconv check in configure.ac and re-encoding is now conditional - depends on iconv availability. For autoconf stuff m4/iconv.m4 should be copied from glibc or gettext. Just in case description from closed bug: There are several problems (though minor) with emails with encoded headers: - dspam only decodes headers in Base64 or QuotedPrintable, but ignores encoding, thus writes data into logs in different charsets - webui completely ignores encoded headers in Quarantine view and outputs whatever was written into logs in History view. Thus, for countries with many charsets (eg. Russia) its very difficult to view either Quarantine or History views - most Subjects and "From" lines are unreadable. Attached patches convert everything into utf-8, thus solving this problems. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- >Comment By: Tom Hendrikx (tomhendr) Date: 2012-12-28 14:39 Message: I tested this and it does seem to work when iconv is available. However I still have several issues: - automake complains about missing config.rpath file. I ran into this when trying to add iconv.m4 myself, but there seems to be no solution on google for that, only questions, and workarounds (e.g. create an empty file). - The iconv.m4 from gettext does not allow to disable iconv when it is installed. The second issue also means that I currently have no way to test if dspam still works without using iconv. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=1126467&aid=3592411&group_id=250683 |

Hi, While working on dspam stuff I ran into blocklisting, which is apparently a way to block messages within DSPAM too. It is totally undocumented, but after reading the source and having google find mailing list stuff from 2007, I got it work: the related code is minimal but seems to work fine. Is there any reason why this feature is completely undocumented? It seems to be there since at least 2005 (git blame points finger at jonz). If you want to test it: General idea is to create list in /var/spool/dspam/data/<username>/username.blocklist, and add some domain names, each on a line. The domain from the email address in the From: header is matched against the list, and any hit directly marks the message as Blocklisted/Spam. The message is not learned as spam or used in any other way. -- Regards, Tom |

Category: None Group: v3.10.x Status: Pending Resolution: None Priority: 5 Private: No Submitted By: Ingo Theiss (itheiss) Assigned to: Stevan Bajic (sbajic) Summary: DSPAM broken after upgrade to PostgreSQL 9.1 Initial Comment: After PostgreSQL 9.1 has hit Debian/testing DSPAM fails to insert data into the table 'dspam_signature_data' (see attached sql_erros.txt). After digging around in the source code I have seen the function 'PQescapeByteaConn' (pgsql_drv.c line 1574) is used to escape the data. Unfortunately with PostgreSQL 9.1 the default from the setting 'standard_conforming_strings' has changed from 'off' to 'on'. Please read the following thread as I am not an expert in C-Programming nor in PostgreSQL: http://postgresql.1045698.n5.nabble.com/PQescapeByteaConn-returns-wrong-string-for-PG9-1-Beta3-td4667713.html I can confirm that DSPAM is working again if I set 'standard_conforming_strings = off' in my postgresql.conf. But since the new default for PostgreSQL 9.1 is 'standard_conforming_strings = on' this should be considered in pgsql_drv.c. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: The Duck (duck207) Date: 2012-12-11 17:07 Message: I got warnings with this fix and standard_conforming_strings to off and this resulted in DSPAM returning with a non-zero exit code and mail delivery failure. Maybe seeting escape_string_warning to off would help, as it warns if any backslash is found in the string, even if doubled. As i can now switch standard_conforming_strings to on, i just did, then i should be able to ping this bug if the fix is not enough. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Ingo Theiss (itheiss) Date: 2011-10-03 01:55 Message: Hi Stevan, so far I have used the Debian packages from Julien Valroff (http://www.kirya.net/) which are available from the official Debian Backports repository. I will try to compile the pgsql part and the if problem still exists. Regards, Ingo ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Stevan Bajic (sbajic) Date: 2011-10-01 02:37 Message: Hello Ingo, can you try latest GIT version of DSPAM and tell me if the problem still exists there? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=1126467&aid=3413998&group_id=250683 |

We are currently upgrading from dspam-3.6.8 to dspam-3.10.2. Long ago we had functional issues with the web ui, especially regarding the delivery of false positives, and we made changes to prevent false positives (or whole quarantines) from disappearing, no matter how rarely. I am now figuring out which changes are still useful, and I would like to present these to the DSPAM developers for consideration. The first is fcntl file locking (like the DSPAM binary uses) when updating the DSPAM quarantine. Attached is a patch originally written by Ken Marshall. If the developers find this useful, I will submit another patch or two in the next few days. Thanks. Tod Sandman Sr. Systems Administrator Middleware Development & Integration Rice University |

Commit is: http://dspam.git.sourceforge.net/git/gitweb.cgi?p=dspam/dspam;a=commit;h=87c1689539567b8af0e4e11df251d974cdd8c9e5 Hi Marc, The problem is simple: the patch is fine, but it does not compile on systems that don't have iconv installed, or have iconv installed but in a non-standard location. Leaving the patch in-tree would leave the tree in an uncompilable state on a number of systems that we currently support, f.i. FreeBSD. To fix the problem, we would need some extra stuff in ./configure that allows flexibility with iconv usage: enable/disable and pass in non-standard install locations, and some minor code changes to the existing patch to make use of the at configure-time defined variables. I spent some time getting the iconv.m4 from http://www.gnu.org/software/libiconv/ integrated but insofar I failed miserably. Feel free to try it yourself. I'd be very happy to review and commit this, as I really think the current behaviour is ugly. The goals are as simple as: - use iconv on systems where it is available (even on non-standard locations). - allow to use non-iconv handling (aka 'the olde way') when iconv is not available - bonus points: leave room for future enhancements that allow the utf-8 handling with some other library. Kind regards, Tom |

Dspam does read chunk of 1023 bytes until it reach a newline or the timeout is expired. The timeout is reasonable, probably even too nice since RFC 5321 mandates that "The maximum total length of a text line including the <CRLF> is 1000 octets (not counting the leading dot duplicated for transparency)". However, I believe first the message should be more meaningful and second that maybe dspam should not be more picky than the MTA. After all, dspam's role is to tag message according to their spam likeliness, am I wrong? Hence dspam should not refuse an email which a MTA accepted. As to the error message I suggest that in the case of timeout expiration, the following message is used: "5.3.4 Message too big for system". I am still getting startup error. Daemon process starting Could not bind to :24: Permission denied Daemon mode failed to start Daemon process exiting ---------------------------------------------------------------------- >Comment By: Tom Hendrikx (tomhendr) Date: 2012-09-29 14:51 Message: Your question is a bit vague, but if I understand you correctly, you mean the issue reported in bug #2947397? The bug and the fix have nothing to do with the "Could not bind to :24: Permission denied" issue. The problem in that bug was that the daemon did not exit with a non-zero exit code when an error (such as a permission denied) occurred. So yes, the patch is applied [1], but it does not help with your issue, which sounds like a configuration/setup problem. Please post your question, completed with background details such as configuration to the dspam-user mailing list.
