First of all, you have to download the latest release of Des Spielers Neue Kleider from the download section. Currently there are three packages of Des Spielers Neue Kleider:
You should choose the package according to your skills. If you have no idea what a jar file or Java is, download the executable package. If you are one of those Linux guys who are familiar to compiling their programs from scratch, the source package may be an option for you. According to your choice, go on to step 2.
So you choose the executable package (I assume your using Windows, eh?). In this case you should now have a zip file on your disk, whose name starts with "dsnk", followed by "exe" and a release number (e.g. "dsnk-exe-0.2.1.zip"). Unzip this file to a directory of your choice. Besides license information, a readme file and another zip file containing the source files, you should have a file called "dsnk.exe". Double-click this file to start the Des Spielers Neue Kleider.
At this point a message may appear, which tells you that Java 1.6 could not be found on your computer. Also it asks you for permission to download Java from the internet. Again: If you have no idea what Java is, you should allow the program to download and install it. Java is required to run the program. Otherwise you may cancel the start up of the program and install Java yourself. You can download it for free at Sun's Java page. I will not give you an installation guide for Java in this article, so be sure you know what you are doing if you choose this option.
If Java is properly installed, Des Spielers Neue Kleidung should start up and show you its main window. If not, check the README file for trouble-shooting.
As you choose the jar package, I assume you know what Java is and how you can start Java applications. After downloading the zip file from the download section, unzip it to a directory of your choice. Afterwards go to this directory. Besides license information, a readme file and the zipped source, you should find a file called "DesSpielersNeueKleider.jar". According to your Java installation, it could now be sufficient to open it via double click (or whatever your desktop system/file manager uses to open programs). If nothing happens or you see a listing of the contents of the jar file, you need to do some additional steps, according to your operation system.
Under Windows, right click on the file and select "Open with..." or if there is no such option try "Preferences" (Using Vista a preference window will show up, which allows you to set the "Open with"-Program. Im not sure how the window is designed in older Windows distributions. If you know, send me a mail to hwfans@web.de ). In the "Open with..." dialog choose "Java(TM) Platform SE binary". Now the program should start properly. If not, check the README file for trouble-shooting.
I have no idea how this is done under Linux or Mac. But according to my experiences in the past, if you use this operating systems, you know how to set up a link between jar files and the Java runtime environment. If you have information about how to do this, send me a mail to hwfans@web.de .
Other solutions are to easy for you? Ok, then I hope you are familar to the java compiler and how it is used. I will not give you a guide how to use it. Search the web if you want to know more about compiling Java source files. If you have not enough patience for this, you should better try another package.
After starting the program, you will see a window like this:
It's quite boring, isn't it? So your first step would probably be to open the "File" menu and click on "Preferences...". If you do this, another window will show up:
In the text fields, add the path to the gumpart.mul and gumpidx.mul of your Ultima Online installation. If you're not sure where they can be found, use the "Search" buttons. In this case a file dialog will show up where you can search your file system for the files. After entering the two paths, click on "Ok" to accept.
Now the program reads the two files. As a result, the list on the left side of the program is now filled. The displayed numbers are the IDs of the gumps in the gumpidx.mul file as hexadecimal code. If you click on one of these IDs, you can see the gump. This might look like this:
Fantastic, isn't it? ;-)
Now what's about this to radio buttons at the bottom called "All" and "New"? They are part of the main feature of Des Spielers Neue Kleider. If you again open the "File" menu, you see a menu item called "Search new gumps". Try and click on it. A progress bar will appear and tell you, that the program searches for new gumps. After finishing the task, a message box tells us, that x new gumps were found (which, in fact, are all gumps listed). This is probably the time to tell you, that the function "Search new gumps" would only make sense after the gumpart.mul and gumpidx.mul have been patched. After such an event, try out the function again and then the searching will give you better results. However you really should start the search after the first start of the program, because it not only searches new gumps, but also memorises them. So this step is required to find out which gumps are new or altered.
But what's about "All" and "New"? These are just filters to show all gumps in the list or just the new ones. Note: After your first search for new gumps all gumps are new gumps to the program, so all of them will be listed if you click on "New".
Since version 0.4 you are able to dress a paperdoll with the gumps. To do this, choose "Show paperdoll..." from the "Gump" menu. A new window opens. At the top you can choose between showing a man or a woman as background. Additionally you find a button called "Load gump...". If you click on this button, a file dialog opens and allows you to open a image file in the jpg, png, gif or bmp file format.
To the left you see a gump list like in the main window. If you click an item, the corresponding item in the main window will be selected and you will see a preview of the gump. If you click on "Add to paperdoll" at the bottom, the gump will be added to the paperdoll in the center of the window. It is also added to the list on the right. Each item in this list is also visible on the paperdoll. With "Remove" the gump can be removed, "Up" and "Down" will move the gump upwards and downwards in the list. The gumps on the list will be drawn from top to bottom, so bottommost gump will be drawn last.
A note on gumps: Normally gumps have a width of 237 pixel and a height of 260 pixel. Each pixel drawn in true black will be transparent.
