better generation of RPMs ('depot put' take a tgz file?)
simplify the monitoring/installation environment
get down to one file that takes parameter 'start',
'stop', 'status'
/etc/init.d/appname should be the simple filename
better status reporting on the installation -- there
should be progress info (can yum do this?)
better error reporting -- currently very poor logging
and where the log is is not obvious
