    Brian Wetherell - 2002-04-03

    Heyas;

I am going to need some artists that is experienced in creating textures, 3D object models (using gmax right now), and concept art. I will be starting a project once I have the needed team. Let me tell you a little about the project, so that fellow guildmates will have a better idea of what we will be building.

The project name is Neverwind. It revolves around a world that I've tinkered with and created, at least in writing and imagination, for the last nine years during my spare time. As you can imagine, it has grown quite a lot! For the past two years I have been considering making this project of mine into a mod, but until recently there were no computer roleplaying games (CRPG's) that were competent enough to perform the proverbial acrobatics I suspect will be required of it. Originally, I was targeting the upcoming release of Morrowind to be that engine, but after thuroughly studying the materials for DS, I quickly changed my mind.

At any rate...a little about project. I must first admit that I have drawn healthy amounts of insiration from many different authors; David Eddings, J.R.R. Tolkien, Raymond E. Fiest, Mercedes Lackey, and Terry Brooks, just to name a few. My goal when I began writing was to take an unorthodox approach to orthodox fantasy. Basically, do something different with the same ol' thing.

Since the world is rather large, our first project will only be focused on one nation, named Gath. Gath is rich in history, and has fairly varied landscapes that will contain harsh mountain ranges with snowy peaks, steamy swamps, and ageless forests. The worldbuilders will definitely have their hands full.

For the concept artists, I have very specific things already on the table, and ready to be drawn up. From major historical figures in the land of gath to be modeled, to monumental castles, ruins, abandoned temples, a dwarven city (in caves), a few dieties, as well as an immaculate palace in the capitol city of Gath. That's the items that are READY to be sketched. There are many more things to come.

For those who can create textures, I have already some ideas of what will need to be created, however it is difficult to be able to clearly define, since I personally have little idea of what textures will actually be available in the final release of DS.

For those who can do some 3D object modeling, I have specific, special (and unique) weapons, armor, and and other such items for all classes. It is rather difficult to explain until a concept artist can tackle this rather momentous job.

I myself will be writing the story, serving as project lead (of course), and doing some worldbuilding. I will also be needing to recruit more team members once the editing tools are officially released from GPG, but will announce that at a later date.

Lastly, I am asking that only those serious about volunteering their time, effort, and imagination to apply. If you doubt you will have the time, or dedication to this project, please do not waste my time, or yours. I want to do this project right, from beginning to end. For nine years it has been a passion of mine, and I hope to share that passion with those who enjoy high fantasy as much as I do.

Well, I've rambled quite enough. If you are interested, please post a reply, or email me at beemer131@aol.com

    Thanks,
    Klavis Verge

You know... This sounds like an impressive and massive Mod.  :) Is it possible to break it up into buildable pieces so that a portion can be worked on and then released, then move on to the next portion... and when all the portions are built, you can piece them together for 1 big download and game.

This is what we are doing with the Blood of Brothers mod... Graveyard Quest is the first quest in the series.  This ensures that we can get something built while keeping risk down.

Anyway, just a thought.  Let me know how the planning and recruiting goes!

BTW, you added some more details on PDS forums --
Might be good for others to see here (so I'm including the link).

That may be a possibility, and might explore that option once I have a full team assembled, and can get everyone's input! Thanks for the suggestion.

      Sincerely,

      Fascinating.

I'd suggest that you pick a small section, Klavis, and just work on that.  What I mean, is that you will not be able to sustain a team for 3 years developing in effect what GPG has done with 30 people over 3-4 years!  (Unless you are writing checks...)

So, in order to see even a portion of the dream live, and get some participation, you would be better of to decide what portion of Gath is best.  That is, easiest to make, most exciting, coolest, whatever.  Then Build that part up with a relatively small team, starting like you say with a concept artist.  Once the first part is released, and it is good, you will likely get more participation.

One of the game development mantras is "prototype, prototype, prototype."  You need to get something real developed sooner, rather than later.

In short, I agree with Charles' suggestion.  :)
