How modable is DS exactly?

I have several things I would like to do to the game and would like to know if what I am proposing is possible or not...

First of all, is there a way to create a dedicated server that will exept connections in real-time and update the world from what is happening ingame and allows many many connections and not just 8...

I would like to create something similar to Ultima Online or Dark Age of Camalot, where there are trade skills and a full economy, warring nations, etc.

Is there a way to add extra stats and skills?

    Are the menus customizable?

Are there ways to make NPCs that actually serve purpose and do things instead of just standing in one spot and saying 1 thing...

Is there a way to make a bank where players can store items, gold, etc.

All I'm looking for in this thread is a simple yes or no answer for each of the items I proposed not a 2,000 word theses on how to do it.  I just wanna know if it can be done so i don't waste time looking for ways to do the impossible.  Thank You.

I forgot to add some things...

Is there a way to make "GM" type accounts that will be in charge of fixing things ingame and are there ingame commands to change things?

Also... if it is possible I would want some sort of housing system as well. (I always liked that aspect of UO)

And I'm not saying I'll be doing this but is the magic system completely changeable, i.e. can magic be localized and so on.

ok, As far as I can tell most of what you are suggesting could be done, I even know of people trying to add a Vampire the masquarade/NWN Story teller control system.

      However:
"""First of all, is there a way to create a dedicated server that will exept connections in real-time and update the world from what is happening ingame and allows many many connections and not just 8...

This seems like a source code job. Not a mod. I don't believe you could mod any game to be like that (unless it was almost already there).

The source code for DS is unlikely to be released any time soon.

Mods means that you can change the game content, and hack some basic engine physics. But it is unlikely that you will be able to mod server conections, doing that would require source code, then what you are doing is not really a mod any more but a game.

      Go here:
      www.garagegames.com

There you will find the Torque engine (Tribes 2) on sale for only $100. This includes full source code, and rights to publish a game. I believe this is you best bet for making the MMORPG you want. Also read some of the forum posts on MMORPG, and notice how many people want to make them. The cost, time, and skill of a MMORPG development is great. Its more than just a "mod".

I agree with Ian.  The sad truth is that any MMOG takes a lot of time -- and that is from full time developers.  It will be nice when one day we can buy a graphics engine (like Torque or DS?), a MM network engine (peer to peer? sweet), and a rules engine.  Then writing the next MMOG will become so much more a possibility for us modders.

DSFallout?  When is it coming? :)
