Syntax Highlighting (Python, C/C++, HTML(XML?), Plain Text) is in CVS.
You can mess with the styles for each file tyo3e in preferences, as well as choose default highlighting scheme (if the file extension is not recognized), or turn off automatic recognition of file types entirely.
The next version should be out soon.

Yes, this is a good idea. The next few days will be...uh... FULL. However I am addign this to the todo list in cvs for 2.3.6.
