There has been a flurry of new releases in the last month, and they have been steadily making their way into Dropline GNOME. The two main additions to this release are Mozilla 1.4 and Evolution 1.4. Evolution has also been moved out of the "extras" directory on the Dropline CD, and is now available for everyone to download. Updates have also been made to the core GNOME libraries, the GIMP, Gnumeric, GnomeMeeting, and others. Users who were having installation problems with the previous release should find that things go smoothly now--the issue with the Dropline Installer failing while building the category list has been resolved. Download: http://www.dropline.net/gnome/download.php ChangeLog: Dropline GNOME 2.2.4 - 07.05.03 * Added Evolution 1.4 and required libraries * Updated to the latest stable releases of Mozilla, the GIMP, Gnumeric, GTK+, GStreamer, GnomeMeeting, OpenLDAP, and the core GNOME libraries * Updated the Dropline Installer to fix the infamous "Building Category List->Main Menu" bug |

The wait has been long, but I do hope it has been worth it. This new version of Slackware's premier desktop includes the very latest GNOME 2.2-series software in full i686-optimized glory. The installation system has been overhauled to add support for categories, localizations, and a cleaner interface. Every non-GNOME package has been upgraded to the latest stable version, such as Mozilla 1.3.1, Gaim 0.63, and Xine 1.0-beta12. The entire releases is based upon GCC 3 for the fastest, most reliable code generation possible. And did I mention the i686 optimizations? With this release, support for Slackware 8.1 and i386, i486, and i585 architectures has been discontinued. The Dropline Installer can detect Slackware 8.1 systems and will not update to the GCC 3 packages on them. CDs of Dropline GNOME 2.2.2, the last release built upon GCC 2.95 for i386 machines, will continue to be made available for a while, but the 8.1 packages will not be updated. As always, current Dropline GNOME users can upgrade easily via the Dropline Installer, while new users will need to first obtain the Installer from our download page at http://www.dropline.net/gnome/download.php. Enjoy! ChangeLog for Dropline GNOME 2.2.3 - 05.31.03 - Updated to the latest GNOME 2.2-series software and rebuilt every package with i686 optimizations - Overhauled the Dropline Installer to support categories and localizations - Tons of small fixes that have accumulated over the past 2 months ;) |

The latest release of Dropline GNOME has made its way to the servers and is ready for use. Despite the tiny version bump (the 2.2 reflects the GNOME release Dropline is based off of and won't change until GNOME 2.4 is released) there are some big changes here. First, every package has had a "dl" appended to the revision number, allowing Dropline GNOME to be installed on Slackware 9-beta systems without problems. This extends Dropline's compatibility to include Slackware 8.1 and higher, Vector Linux, Yoper, and CollegeLinux. Second, some high-profile packages have been added. Xfree86 4.3, MrProject, and the GNOME System Tools are all new-come to this release, while the rest of the packages have been upgraded to their most recent stable versions. Finally, a Dropline Update Alert applet was added to keep everyone notified when new Dropline software becomes available. Due to a small bug in the previous release of the Dropline Installer, all users are encouraged to first upgrade to the latest installer (2.0.4) before performing this update. If you don't, you'll receive an error during the installation of MrProject. The Dropline Installer can be found http://www.dropline.net/gnome/download.php. ChangeLog: # Updated the librsvg package to fix an issue on new installations # Updated the xft1 package to fix KDE/QT fonts # Updated GNOME-VFS and the Control Center to fix the Theme Manager # Updated PAM to fix problems for users with NULL passwords # Updated WebFonts to fix problems on systems with older versions of tar # Added XFree86 4.3.0 which obsoletes the xft1, xft2, xrender, and fontconfig packages # Added GNOME System Tools, patched to support Slackware 8.1 # Appended a "dl" the each package's revision number to allow installation on Slackware 9-beta systems # Various changes to improve Slackware 9 and Vector Linux compatibility # Added a Dropline Update Alert applet # Added a Menu Editor launcher to the Control Center # Added Fontilus, MrProject and GNOME-Python # Updated Bluefish, Expat, Flac, FreeType, Gaim, LibDVDCSS, Pan, Speex and XChat to the latest releases # Updated the core GNOME Desktop packages to the latest releases Todd Kulesza Dropline Systems |

The 2.1.90 release of Dropline GNOME wasn't bad; 2.2.0 is much better. Nearly all of the small bugs have been squashed, cool refinements to the desktop have been made, and a work-around now exists for using the Theme Manager. PAM has been integrated into this release, allowing normal users to configure GDM, run the Dropline Installer, shutdown, and reboot the computer after being prompted for the root password. The Dropline Installer has also been updated to support an automatic update mode that completely bypasses the menu system--quite useful for those of you running it from a cron daemon ;) . New users will need to download the installer from http://www.dropline.net/gnome/download.html, while existing users can type "dropline-installer" and follow the menu system to perform the upgrade. If you'd like to support the project, CDs are also available for purchase at http://www.dropline.net/gnome/purchase.html. Also, an official Dropline GNOME IRC channel now exists. Forum member rfgarcia has setup #Dropline on FreeNode.net, so if you'd a place to chill and discuss GNOME on Slackware, head on over. ChangeLog: Dropline GNOME 2.2.0 - 02.08.03 * Updated the Dropline Installer to work with CD installations, non-default cache directory installations, and to fix the terminal after it runs * Updated VTE and GTK-Engines * Fixed GKrellM package and updated to latest version * Updated the whole Xft/FontConfig/Pango/GTK+ rendering system with XRender to fix subpixel font rendering * Updated the Control Center to fix the Theme Manager bugs * Updated the Dropline Installer again, this time to add MD5 checking, continue broken downloads, fix the non-root permission problems for people with messed up umasks, add file size to the package selection menu, and other bug fixes * Updated Gaim to latest CVS * Updated Xine-libs and added Totem back to the release * Updated Xine-ui to match Xine-libs * Upgraded to FreeType 2.1.4rc1 with further refinements to the autohinter * Added PAM and usermode packages to allow normal users root priveleges under certain conditions * Updated GNOME Meeting to the latest release * Added the very-slick Spheres & Crystals theme * Updated to the latest release of RedHat-Artwork for improved GTK+ 2.2 compatibility * Updated to the latest release of Gnumeric * Updated GNOME Desktop packages to the official GNOME 2.2.0 release Todd Kulesza Dropline Systems |

The four weeks since the latest Dropline release have been busy. The Dropline Installer was completely rewritten using a new ncurses interface similar to Slackware's Pkgtool and package selection was implemented. GTK+ was then updated to the 2.2.0 release which fully takes advantage of Xft2 and Fontconfig. After the release of GNOME 2.2 RC-1, the entire GNOME framework updated as well. RedHat's Bluecurve desktop theme was included, as well as CD burning support for Nautilus and a slew of new plugins for GStreamer, the new media backend for GNOME 2.2. New users will need to download the Dropline Installer from http://www.dropline.net/gnome/download.html, while existing users can type "dropline-installer --upgrade" to update their Installer, and then issue the command "dropline-installer" to start the new menu-based installation system. ChangeLog for Dropline GNOME 2.1.90 - 01.17.03 * Updated the GTK+ libraries to GTK+ 2.2.0 * Updated the GNOME libraries and utilities to GNOME 2.2 RC-1 * Updated the Dropline Installer to 2.0.0, including a new interface, proxy support, an uninstall option, and package selection * Updated every package to the latest version available * Rebuilt the entire Dropline GNOME Desktop against GTK+ 2.2 and GNOME 2.2, removing the "-dropline-" in every package name * Added RedHat's Bluecurve desktop theme * Added a slew of plugins for GStreamer, the new GNOME media backend * Added media thumbnailing and CD burning support to Nautilus * Removed Sawfish, Totem, and Rhythmbox until they are fixed for GNOME 2.2 * Switched to a new version scheme based off of the current GNOME release You can discuss Dropline GNOME on the Dropline Forums at http://www.dropline.net/forums/. This refinement to Dropline GNOME overhauls the entire media framework. The 1.0 version of the OGG-Vorbis codec has been added, the GStreamer system has been updated to 0.4.2, the Xine libraries have been updated to the 1.0-Beta release, Totem has been added as a video player for GNOME, and RhythmBox has been updated to 0.4.1. The BlueFish HTML editor has also been included, as well as the GKrellM system monitor. Finally, the GFTP, GAim, and LibXML packages have also all seen updates, and the Dropline Installer has been modified to automatically remove older installation packages as they are upgraded to newer versions. New users can get the latest installer from http://www.dropline.net/gnome/download.html, while existing users can issue a "dropline-installer --upgrade" to first update their installer, and then again to update their system. Version 1.2.0 of the Dropline GNOME Desktop is now available. This release sees several updates to the Dropline Installer--it is now possible to choose exactly which packages to install using the --with and --without command options, package removal has been postponed in case of errors during the install process, and of course, all known bugs have been resolved. Updates are available for many of the core GNOME packages which include bug fixes and Dropline tweaks to improve the overall consistency of the desktop. FileRoller has been added, allowing Nautilus to finally unpack and create archives. All of this, however, pales in comparison to the main addition for this release... Mozilla 1.2 Beta with Anti-Aliased Text! Yes, it happened. A stable build of Mozilla with sweet, smooth fonts is now available for Slackware Linux. To enjoy it, download the latest Dropline Installer and start updating. As always, if your sick of long download times, CDs can be purchased for $15. Please see http://www.dropline.net/gnome for more information.
