My take on this - #1 sounds right, but the delay to restart has to be pretty reasonable. (Wacky idea: If startup really does take a long time and that can't be fixed, how about starting a "hot-spare" VM in the background and swapping to it when the user resets the interactions window?) #2 depends on how it's done. We don't want the students to react to the display of the root directory by saying "oh! So that's where the computer wants me to put the file!".
