We have a new build that is nearly ready to release as a candidate stable release but we have a few glitches in the unit tests on Linux (they all pass on Windows). I predict that we will fix these glitches by the end of today (Friday). At any rate, a new candidate stable release is imminent. After the candidate stable release comes out, it will be converted to a stable release in a week if no serious problems are detected. -- Corky Cartwright |

Hi It seems that stable versions are released approximately once per year. There was one in 2003-08-22 and then another in 2004-03-26. The new academic term is due to start soon. Is there likely to be another stable release in the next two weeks? Thank you Sue McGlashan CDF System Administrator |

The release includes several new features in addition to a lot of bug fixes. The most significant features added are the synchronization structure of DrJava, the Quick Start Guide(found in the help menu), as well as the Jar file creation. The language levels has also changed their semantics slightly on the Intermediate Level, regarding package declaration and visibility of methods. Please download this beta release and use it as your primary copy of DrJava, submitting any bugs that you find. The intend is to release a stable version based on this release in about a week. Thank you for helping us to improve DrJava! Download the new Beta Version at: www.drjava.org |

An updated release for the DrJava Plug-in for Eclipse is now available. This plug-in provides an Interactions Pane and a simplified user interface to Eclipse through a "DrJava Perspective." In addition to fixing a critical error on the Macintosh JVM, the new plug-in includes full support for the language extensions in Java 1.5, including generics, varargs, and auto-boxing. For more information, see our Eclipse plug-in page (http://drjava.sf.net/eclipse.shtml). Neal |

This release of DrJava is a candidate stable release. The release includes some new features and further more bug fixes. Since the latest stable release, we have added three major features: full support in the Interactions pane of DrJava for the upcoming Java 1.5, as well as the Definitions pane, three Java language levels (language subsets) that aim to aid in smoothing the Java language learning curve, and, for advanced developers, support for projects. Since the latest development release, we have added a directory chooser that uses a tree view of the file system, support to compile and test entire DrJava projects, support for auxiliary and external files in projects, more consistency in the behavior and look of the definitions pane and interactions pane, support in the Interactions pane for the new '&' Java 1.5 generics syntax, and, finally, added also an 'Advanced' language level. We fixed issues that prevented running a new DrJava from within DrJava, as well as issues in the Intermediate language level. Please download and test this release as your primary copy of DrJava. -Moez |

Hi all, I've just joined the list and am starting to use DrJava. I'm running: % java -jar drjava-20040707-2332.jar on a Solaris machine using JDK 1.5 (beta2). I'm trying to compile a project where there are lots of Lists that aren't been initialised with a generic type (eventually I want to still be able to compile this on earlier versions of the JDK). At compile time, DrJava is flagging these as errors: 210 errors found: File: /spare/richb/jaccesshelper/src/jaccesshelper/main/AbstractAccessTest.java [line: 588] Warning: [unchecked] unchecked call to add(E) as a member of the raw type java.util.List ... even though it's calling them Warnings. I've tried adding: show.unchecked.warnings = false to my ~/.drjava configuration file and rebuilding the project, but these errors still persist. What am I missing? Am I going to have to initialize these lists with the appropriate generic type in order to get DrJava to compile them correctly (even though they should just be warnings)? Are pointers on how to solve this would be very much appreciated. Thanks. -- Rich Burridge Email: ric...@Su... Sun Microsystems Inc. My apologies for the extra e-mail, but I forgot to mention a couple of important points. First of all, this development release requires Java SDK 1.4 or above. This change was necessary because attempting to compile the new language level code with our modified version of the JSR-14v2.5 jar (which would make it compatible with 1.3) would cause a strange Hotspot error at compile-time that we did not know how to get around. We are interested in hearing your feedback about this change, especially if you are a user that is using 1.3 and cannot upgrade. Second, developers will have to run "cvs update" in the lib directory to get the new javalanglevels.jar. The code itself is located in the CVS repository of the SourceForge site called javalanglevels. James |

This development release of DrJava includes a great deal of new features and some bug fixes. We have now added support for Language Levels, projects, and Java 1.5 features in the Interactions Pane. The language level facility supports progressively complex subsets of the Java language. Two of the main benefits of language levels are the avoidance of the need to teach students a great deal of syntax before they can begin to write programs in Java and the commonplace methods such as toString and equals that are automatically generated at the early levels. Only the Elementary and Intermediate levels are supported at this time. More detailed documentation on language levels can be found at http://www.cs.rice.edu/~javaplt/doc/LanguageLevelDocumentation.html. The project facility allows users to create .pjt files that store a list of files that are associated with a project and the path that compiled files should be placed in. Users can open, save, and close projects from the new Project menu. Project files are displayed as trees in the document list pane on the left. In the future, more functionality will be added to projects. Java 1.5 features such as autoboxing/unboxing, static import, foreach, variable arguments, and enums are now supported in the Interactions Pane if DrJava is run with a Java 1.5 compiler. Generics are allowed, but no type-checking is done. A major memory leak has been fixed such that projects with hundreds of files can now be opened. There were other minor bug fixes as well. There are many new features in this release, and we will attempt to release more frequently in the future, however, most of these features were worked on in parallel and completed at nearly the same time. Please download and test this release as your primary copy of DrJava (http://drjava.org). Signing off, James |

A new version of the DrJava Plug-In for Eclipse has been released! This version increases ease of typing long interactions into the interactions pane. Upon pressing enter, the interactions pane automatically detects if the user has not finished typing and gives the user a newline rather than attempting to interpret the incomplete interaction. This version also allows reverse searching through the interactions pane by typing partial text and pressing tab. You can go to <http://drjava.sf.net/eclipse.shtml> http://drjava.sf.net/eclipse.shtml to download the new plug-in. Please send us any comments you have! Neal |

This development release of DrJava contains support for the Java 1.5.0 beta compiler as well as the JSR14v2.5 compiler. Also, only one compiler per version of compiler is now shown. For example, users will only see one java 1.4.1 compiler. Please download and test this release as your primary copy of DrJava. James |

A new stable version of DrJava, drjava-stable-20040326, has just been released! This version includes new features, along with numerous bug fixes and usability improvements. The most notable changes include the automatic insertion of newlines when an interaction in not complete, the ability to search backwards through history by typing the first few letters of a previous command and hitting Tab, the ability to find/replace only whole words, and an improved undo function that removes series of typed text at once. Buttons have been added to error panels to allow easier scrolling through errors. More detailed information can be found in the Release Notes. Please download this version from http://drjava.org and use it as your primary copy of DrJava. We welcome any feedback you have on this release; please submit any suggestions or difficulties as feature requests and bug reports on our SourceForge site. Thanks! James |

Yes, as Corky mentioned, .jar files always need to be specified by name, while .class files are specified by the folder containing them. Hope that helps, and sorry if this is redundant! Charlie |

Hi Mary, The Windows App is an executable file that wraps the normal Jar file, adding code that automatically searches for your Java installation location and runs the Jar file. There's no difference in the content of the two files, but many Windows users' files associations are configured incorrectly to run jar files, and the exe file takes care of this issue automatically (assuming you've installed the Java SDK). Hope this helps, James On Tue, 23 Mar 2004, Mary Craven wrote: > When downloading DrJava, would you please tell me the difference between > > Download Jar File > > and > > Download Windows App > > I am running windows xp. > > Thank you very much. > > > > ------------------------------------------------------- > This SF.Net email is sponsored by: IBM Linux Tutorials > Free Linux tutorial presented by Daniel Robbins, President and CEO of > GenToo technologies. There is a new beta release of DrJava made in preparation for the next stable release (http://drjava.org). The primary features added to this release relate to improving the Interactions Pane. First, uninitialized variables are assigned the correct default value and initialization of multi-dimensional arrays now works correctly. Second, newlines are automatically inserted for users if the current interaction is not yet complete. This makes defining methods and classes in the Interactions Pane much easier. Third, users can type in the first few letters of a command in the history and hit the Tab key to cycle through all commands that begin with that sequence of letters. Fourth, the minimum size of the bottom pane has been reduced to allow more room for editing files. Other changes include an improved undo command that can now undo series of typed text at a time. Forward brace matching has been added as well. Also, using System.in will no longer cause DrJava to hang in some cases. Please download this beta release and use it as your primary copy of DrJava, submitting any bugs that you find. We intend to release a stable version of DrJava based on this release by the end of this week, depending on the feedback we receive. Thanks for your help with DrJava! James |
