drjava-beta-20020804 has now been released! This version is in preparation for the next stable release, and includes all the new features from the recent development releases, such as the debugger, preferences window, and online help. Please test it out and report any new bugs this week-- we'll also be fixing any problems we find during this week's TeachJava conference. After the upcoming stable release, our tenative plans include supporting JSR14 v1.2 (so people outside Rice can actually compile DrJava again), moving JUnit to the interactions JVM (so tests can be debugged), and finally addressing the performance of indent. Don't forget to sign up to monitor stable release announcements, if you haven't already! (It's in a different project category on Sourceforge.) Charlie |

The application will start up, tell me it can't find the compiler (has not been able to find the compiler for a while) and seems to hang when 'no' is pressed - with the 7/9 release, it continues to start up with no compiling capability. The problem is that as soon as anything is compiled, or the interactions window is reset, the following message keeps on appearing, and drjava can no longer be used. The default handler for GZip compressed files in Mac OS X is a third-party utility called StuffIt Expander. This utility is included with a standard OS X installation, and it is the program executed when a user double-clicks a *.gz file in the Finder. Unfortunately, this program does not support OS X-style long file names, AND it apparently cannot read long filenames out of GZip archives. When a user double-clicks a *.gz file with a filename longer than 31 characters, the file that is decompressed typically has a mangled name with an incorrect filename extension. What this means for us is that we cannot ship *.dmg.gz files with the full version number on them, since the resulting filename is well over 31 characters long. The package I've just uploaded uses a compressed image format instead, resulting in a slightly larger file that will work on all OS X systems. I also included the user documentation PDF in the image so that it is a single-download distributable package. The PDF works fine with OS X's included Preview application. -- Peter |
