Another abnormalty to check, is that for some reason, at least on my machine the radeon module is not marked as dependent on the agpgart module, thus you need to set your modules.conf to load the AGPGART module before the radeon.o module. The DRI driver for XFree86 tries to do this, but it loads it by a linked name that isn't existant on all systems. (You can check your syslog from when booting XFree86 to determine what it's trying to load.
