I'm interested in perhaps working on ATI Rage Pro support under DRI. I
understand some work has been done on it, but it has been going slowly.
Can someone tell me the status of that work, and where to get whatever code
has been done?
(is it in CVS?)

For the support question see the list archives, the recent disussion
covers it up quite well. The Mach64 branch tagged to 20th of
December (to get the commit from the 18th, see man cvs) was the last
that worked for me, but lots of things are missing, not only
performance-wise but if you need anything more than Quake-3 wrt
Hope this helps

Not currently. There is, however, an effort initiated by Manuel Teira to
rectify the problem. Right now, the code compiles clean, but doesn't run
right. Right now, I'm looking through what he's got that he derived from
Gareth's original work to see what I can fix for him.

Not a lot. It's very old code that's not secure and not bus-mastering.
We're using it as a sort of crib-sheet for the in-progress drivers, but it's
not terribly useful for end-user purposes.
