In the end I looked at my XF86Config file, and looked at the Identifier label in the Device section (and the subsequent Device entry in the Screen section), and I had spaces and things in there that I realised might confuse things slightly, so I changed them to a simpler label that wouldn't confuse things at all. Fired up X, fired up tuxracer, and got a steady 12 or 13 fps at 640*480*16. glxgears now gives me around 290fps, and glquake runs very, very nicely. To put that in perspective with your system, I have an AthlonXP1400.
