The CVS tree is big. That's because it includes an Xserver, lots of 2D
drivers and some libraries. Basically you compile a stripped down
XFree86. Note that the savage-2-0-0-branch is deprecated now. The savage
driver has been merged to the trunk. That means you need DRI CVS and
Mesa CVS now to compile the 3D driver and matching 2D driver from
source. See the building instructions at

binary snapshots now. Check the download page.
